Clallam, Jefferson conservation districts set 2015 elections

The Clallam and Jefferson conservation districts are conducting poll-site board elections in 2015, but dates for the votes and for candidate filings differ.

Elections are for one seat for a three-year term in each district.

Clallam County’s election for one board seat, now filled by Don Hatler, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Lazy J Tree Farm, 225 Gehrke Road off Old Olympic Highway between Port Angeles and Sequim.

Candidates must file by 4 p.m. Jan. 29.

Jefferson County’s polls for the board seat now held by Elijah Christian, which also is for a three-year term, will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 4 at 205 W. Patison St. in Port Hadlock,

Candidates must file by 4 p.m. Feb. 4.

A nominating petition must be included with the candidate filing for each elected position. It must be signed by 25 or more registered county voters.

Anyone residing and registered to vote in the county is eligible to run for the position of conservation district supervisor.

Absentee ballots for the Clallam election can be requested through Feb. 5; in Jefferson County, they must be requested by 4 p.m. Feb. 11.

Appointed positions

Terms also are expiring for three-year appointed positions: the seat held by Ben Smith in Clallam County and that held by Roger Short in Jefferson County.

Appointees are named by the Washington State Conservation Commission, which must receive applications by March 31.

Applicants must be registered to vote in Washington state. They are not required to live within the district.

Five positions comprise each of the conservation district boards.

Each serves a three-year term of office without compensation. Registered voters elect three of the positions, while the other two are appointed by the state.
