PORT ANGELES — Fire destroyed a travel trailer on the west side of Port Angeles on Thursday morning, displacing a female resident who was inside at the time.

The trailer, near the alley behind 1228 W. 15th St., was fully involved when firefighters arrived shortly before 9 a.m.

Heavy smoke blanketed the surrounding neighborhood less than a block from Stevens Middle School.

Assistant Fire Chief Keith Bogues said the resident was asleep in the trailer when flames broke out but managed to escape without serious injury.

The resident told firefighters that the woman noticed an acrid odor but didn’t think much of it at the time.

“She woke up later to crackling sounds and saw fire and she emergency exited,” Bogues said.

“We’re taking her down [to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles] for evaluation for smoke inhalation.”

Bogues declined to identify the woman.

No other injuries were reported.

The resident had reported electrical issues in the trailer the day before, but Bogues said it was too early in the investigation to pin down a cause of the fire.

When firefighters arrived, they laid hoses for more than a block from a hydrant on South D Street, prompting police to close several streets in the area.

Small explosions from within the trailer echoed through the neighborhood, but firefighters quickly knocked down the flames. Crews spent part of the morning putting out hot spots.

The trailer was completely destroyed, Bogues said.
