NEWS BRIEFS: Counterfeit bills also surface east of Port Angeles . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — Authorities continue to investigate reports of counterfeit money in the Port Angeles area.

Port Angeles police said they received three reports of counterfeit money Monday evening involving $10 and $20 bills with common serial numbers.

Each of the $10 bills were marked with the serial number JD80187995A, while the $20 bills were marked with MD36540722B.

Anyone who receives a bill with either of these serial numbers is asked to call police at 360-452-4545.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that counterfeit $50 bills also were surfacing.

Deputies said the Walmart store east of Port Angeles received $400 in counterfeit $20 and $50 bills March 18 from a man and woman who drove a maroon compact sedan.

The counterfeit bills were printed on generic but heavier-than-normal paper, deputies said.

The print and images on the bills were not as sharp as true currency, the alignment was off-center and sometimes two-toned on the rear edges, and each lacked the tiny red and blue security fibers, watermark and security thread stating the value.

Businesses that handle cash should follow their own best practices, police have said.
