Beil lauded for Port commission tenure

PORT ANGELES — Outgoing Port of Port Angeles Commissioner Leonard Beil was recognized Monday for a six-year term that created a more open and accessible agency with more public involvement.
Beil and his wife, Tea, were presented with a framed copy of Resolution 05-931 — “A resolution honoring Leonard Beil for his leadership and dedication while serving as commissioner of the Port of Port Angeles.”
The presentation was followed by a short reception that included comments from Beil that were cut short when his wife declared: “I want my cake.”
Beil, a Port Angeles resident, was elected Port commissioner in November 1999 on a reform platform.
He fought to reduce the scope and frequency of the Port commission’s closed executive sessions, increase public participation in Port decisions, develop a map detailing the Port’s numerous properties, enact audiotaping of Port meetings, and make Port meeting minutes more widely available.
Beil was soundly defeated in his re-election bid Nov. 8 by George Schoenfeldt, a joint dispatcher for the Pacific Maritime Association and International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 27, in a bitter campaign.
