Clallam County’s $73.3 million proposed budget ready for public review

Clallam County will offer its $73.3 million 2006 budget for public inspection in a pair of hearings Tuesday.

The first will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The second will open at 6 p.m. and be linked by video between the courthouse and the District Court 2 courtroom in Forks City Hall, 500 E. Division St.

The general fund will spend about $25.9 million, the greatest share — $6.6 million — in the Sheriff’s Department, according to figures prepared by County Administrator Dan Engelbertson.

Other major general fund slices include the assessor, $1 million; information technology, $1.2 million; juvenile services, $2.3 million; parks and building maintenance, $1.5 million; and prosecutor, $1.3 million.

Elwha River bridge

The county’s 52 other funds total $47.5 million, topped by $18.5 million for roads — a 24 percent increase primarily due to the Elwha River bridge replacement.

Alcohol and drug abuse programs will receive $1.1 million. The Health and Human Services Department will spend $1.8 million, and the Opportunity Fund will receive $1 million for studies of sewer and traffic issues in the Carlsborg area.

Capital projects total $3.9 million, much of it funded by a real estate excise tax that produces more than $2 million.

Employee health insurance will cost $4 million, according to Engelbertson.
