WRESTLING: Port Angeles tops rival Sequim

SEQUIM — Port Angeles earned a forfeit in a dual meet with Sequim on Thursday as illnesses and grade-related eligibility issues have thinned the Wolves’ boys wrestling roster to a handful of grapplers.

But the remaining Sequim wrestlers did compete with their Roughrider counterparts, Port Angeles coach Rob Gale said.

“There were a lot of good matches,” Gale said.

The closest of the evening saw the Riders’ Riley Gale edge Sequim’s Murray Bingham 1-0 in the 170-pound weight class.

It was the second time in less than a week the two rivals had wrestled to a tight decision with Gale also winning 8-6 against Bingham, a senior in his first wrestling season, at the Island Invitational Saturday, Jan. 12.

In other matches, Port Angeles’ Adam Borde pinned Sequim’s Jakob Pyeatt at 132 pounds.

Other winners by pin for Port Angeles include Jackson Larson in his match against Zach Koch (152); Trevor Shumway against Kenny Wolfley (182) and Jason Kibe against Logan Laxson (182).

Dom Timperio also earned a 12-2 decision in his 195-pound match.

Port Angeles (5-0) will wrestle for the Olympic League championship at home against Olympic on Thursday. A win would give the Riders the title outright, a loss to the Trojans could mean a three-way tie at the top.

“We want to beat Olympic for the solo championship [and not think about the] possibility of splitting the league championship,” Gale said.
