Sequim’s solid tournament

Sequim wrestlers had a very good tournament with four Wolves’ wrestlers placing.

At the girls’ 2A class, Sequim’s Alma Mendoza finished second at 155 pounds. She was pinned in her championship final by Ally De La Cruz of Kamiak. Her teammate Kiana Pierson was third at 120 pounds, winning her third-place match 2-1 over Julie De La Cruz of Meridian. It was Mendoza’s third straight year placing at the Mat Classic and her highest finish.

With a second- and a third-place finish, the Sequim girls finished 12th in the state with 40.5 team points.

For the Sequim boys, Grant Pierson got a fifth-place finish with a win in his final match with an injury default over Ahmad Jumper of Steilacoom.

Pierson’s Sequim teammate Adrian Klarich won his final match at 182 pounds with a pin over Darius Gilcrist of Orting to finish seventh.

Sequim picked up 26 team points to finish 20th in the state.

Port Angeles had just one wrestler who placed, Ben Basden. He came in sixth at 138 points after losing his final match 8-6 to Zack Nguyen of Cheney. Port Angeles picked up 12 points as a team and came in 38th out of 67 2A schools.

Cody McLain of Chimacum had a great Mat Classic. He lost his first match in the 220-pound weight class, then won five straight matches to finish third. He beat Jared Boswell of Deer Park in an 11-9 overtime match to finish third.

McLain trains and practices with the nearby Port Townsend wrestling team.

“It was an inspirational run for him,” said McLain’s coach Steve Grimm. “His back was against the wall from the start. He dug real deep to win those five in a row,” Grimm said.

Earlier in the consolation round, Boswell beat Braxton Shannon of Mount Baker, who was the only wrestler that beat McLain.

Thanks to McLain’s great showing, Chimacum finished 26th out of 47 1A schools in team points with 19.5 points.
