WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties hurt by rough first inning

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ Kayne Jinks struggled in the first inning and the Lefties fell into a hole they couldn’t climb out of in a 13-2 loss to the Bellingham Bells at Civic Field.

Jinks walked five in one-third of an inning and was charged with five earned runs in Tuesday’s loss. The Bells ended up scoring nine runs in the first inning.

After that first inning, Lefties pitchers settled down and kept the Bells in check. However, other than a two-run home run in the second inning by Dom Dominguez, the Lefties couldn’t mount much offense against Bellingham’s pitchers.

Josh Verkuilen came in to pitch in relief and did well, going 4⅔ innings and allowing five hits and one earned run. He walked one and struck out four. Francisco Lopez and Kole Acker (Port Angeles High School) also pitched well. They went a combined three innings, allowing two hits, one walk and no earned runs. They struck out four.

Port Angeles (14-26, 3-10 second half) and Bellingham (28-15, 9-4 second half) played again Wednesday with the result after press deadline. The Lefties will wrap up their series against the Bells at 6:35 p.m. today.
