TRACK: Area athletes qualify for state

WOODLAND — Forks’ Cole Baysinger won the discus at the District 4 Track and Field Championships and will be going to the State 1A meet in Cheney on Thursday in two events.

Baysinger won the discus with a throw of 134 feet, 8 3/4 inches. He’ll also be going to state in the shot put after he came in third in that event with a personal best put of 45-4 3/4.

Marissa Bailey of Forks will be going to state in two events. She finished second in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:27.20 and came in third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:35.30.

Track athletes from Neah Bay, Clallam Bay, Crescent, Chimacum and Port Townsend also qualified for state at 1B, 1A and 2A districts this weekend:

Port Angeles, Sequim

2A District

RENTON — Port Angeles’ Gracie Long and Sequim’s Murray Bingham each won their 1,600-meter races at the West Central 2A District meet at Renton Friday.

The meet is continuing Saturday. Complete results will be in Monday’s Peninsula Daily News. Long won her 23rd event this track season in a time of 5:19.11, beating Morgan Bingham of Sequim by three seconds. Both girls will be going to state.

Murray Bingham won the boys’ 1,600 in 4:33.40.

Riley Cowan of Sequim also qualified for state, finishing third in the javelin with a throw of 161-5. Port Angeles’ Devin Edwards also made state, finishing fourth in the girls’ shot put with a put of 32-7 1/2.

The state 2A meet will be held at Mount Tahoma High School beginning May 25.

Port Townsend, Chimacum

1A District

RENTON — Port Townsend’s Seren Dances and Audrey Botkin and Chimacum’s Chris Sevilla all won events at the West Central 1A District meet in Renton Friday.

Dances won the 110-meter hurdles in 15 seconds flat, a personal record and the top 110 hurdles time in the state at the 1A level. Meanwhile, Botkin won the girls’ 100-meter hurdles in 15.09, also a personal record and the second-fastest 100 hurdles time in the state at the 1A level.

Dances also finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 43-10. He competed in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles Saturday, two events he will likely qualify for state in.

Sevilla won the javelin with a personal-record throw of 161-7.

Also qualifying for state so far is the Port Townsend 4×100 relay team of Kyle Blankenship, Gerry Coker, Berkley Hill and Erik Pokorny, which finished second with a time of 44.43. Coker also qualified for state individually in the 400-meter run with a third-place time of 52.31.

Port Townsend’s girls 4×200 team (Botkin, Anika Avelino, Ari Winter and Sira Wines) qualified for state by finishing third with a time of 1:51.22. Wines also made state by finishing third in the high jump with a leap of 4-8, while Chimacum’s Jada Trafton made state by finishing third in the long jump at 15-4 1/4.

Complete results of the West Central District 1A meet will be in Monday’s Peninsula Daily News.

The State 1A meet will be begin May 25 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Neah Bay, Crescent, Clallam Bay

1B District

COUPEVILLE — North Peninsula schools came up with four first-place finishes at the 1B Tri-District Track Meet, leading a big contingent of Neah Bay, Clallam Bay and Crescent athletes moving on to the state 1B track championships at Eastern Washington University on May 25.

The girls from Crescent, Clallam Bay and Neah Bay particularly shined, qualifying for state in 32 individual and relay events. Out of 16 schools at Tri-District, the Clallam Bay girls finished second as a team with 109.5 points, while Crescent came in fourth with 59 points and Neah Bay fifth with 46.

Crescent’s Raine Westfall won the girls’ shot put with a put of 32-6 1/2, while Kayla Winck of Neah Bay won the girls’ discus with a throw of 95-9. Jennica Maines of Clallam Bay won the girls’ high jump with a leap of 5-1, while Clallam Bay’s Atokena Abe won the triple jump with a distance of 33-1 1/2. Maines also finished second in the 100-meter run with a time of 13.75, while Abe finished second in the shot put with a put of 31-6.

The Clallam Bay girls’ relay teams shined, taking second in both the 4×200 and 4×400. The Bruins’ Abe, Hannah Olson, Kendra Anderson and Miriam Wonderly ran the 4×200 in 1:56.36, while Olson, Anderson, Wonderly and Molly McCoy ran the 4×400 in 4:38.81. In fact, Clallam Bay, Crescent and Neah Bay all qualified relay teams in the girls’ 4×200, while Clallam Bay and Neah Bay both qualified for state in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

Among the boys, Ryan McCoy of Clallam Bay and Wyatt McNeese both had second-place finishes. McCoy had a high jump of 5-8, good for second, while McNeese had a shot put of 41-9 1/2, also good for second.
