STATE ROUNDUP: Port Angeles, Sequim swimmers place at state; Neah Bay 1-2 at 1B volleyball

FEDERAL WAY — Both Port Angeles and Sequim placed several swimmers at the Class 2A Swim and Dive State Championships held at the King County Aquatic Center on Saturday, with the Roughriders placing eighth as a team and the Wolves 11th.

Three teams from the Olympic League 2A Division had strong showings at state with North Kitsap winning the state championship.

Port Angeles had 104 points, tying with Pullman and one-half of a point ahead of Steilacoom. Sequim finished with 79 points. North Kitsap dominated with 277.5 points.

The best showing of any North Peninsula swimmer was by Sequim’s Mia Coffman, who finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 27.38 seconds, edging out two other swimmers by less than a second. Coffman was also fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.81.

Port Angeles’ Nadia Cole had two fifth-place finishes, in the 200 individual medley (2:14.88) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.16).

Counting relay races, Cole ended up with four top-six finishes.

The Riders’ 200 medley relay team (Kiara Schmitt, Cole, Felicia Che and Emma Murray) came in sixth with a time of 1:56.06 and the Port Angeles 400 freestyle relay team (Che, Maggie Martin, Schmitt and Cole) also came in sixth with a time of 3:50.01.

Sonja Govertsen for the Wolves came in seventh in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.51 and 11th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.50.

Diving — Anne Edwards, PA, 12th, 247.55 points.

200 medley relay — Sequim (Coffman, Sydney Swanson, Sonja Govertsen and Jasmine Itti), 13th, 2:01.10.

200 Individual Medley — Che, PA, 13th, 2:20.77.

100 Butterfly — Che, PA, 13th, 1:03.41.

200 Freestyle — Ashlee Seelye, PA, 14th, 2:10.64; Martin, PA, 15th, 2:11.27.

500 Freestyle — Martin, PA, 15th, 5:46.45.

Volleyball Neah Bay 1-2 at state

YAKIMA — Neah Bay finished 1-2 at the Class 1B State Volleyball Tournament on Thursday and Friday at the Yakima SunDome.

The Red Devils fell 3-1 (25-6, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23) to Pateros to open the tournament, but rebounded later to stay alive by ousting Sunnyside Christian 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23).

But Neah Bay fell a win short of a top eight finish, getting swept 3-0 by Naselle (25-17, 25-13, 26-24).

The Red Devils finished the season 11-8.
