LAKEWOOD — White River took a big lead and then held off a furious charge by Sequim in the Class 2A West Central District boys basketball quarterfinals Thursday night.
The Hornets, 19-5 and ranked No. 7 in state, trimmed the Wolves 52-49.
The Wolves came charging back in the second half but couldn’t quite catch the Hornets.
White River advanced to the semifinals while the Wolves slipped into a loser-out consolation game Saturday against Eatonville at 11 a.m. at Foss High School in Tacoma.
Against White River, the Wolves fell behind 26-14 at the break but rallied back to within a point with 12 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.
“We dug a little bit of a hole in the first half,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.
“We didn’t move so well offensively. We did better in the third quarter and played with them, but we really cut into their lead in the fourth quarter but fell a little bit short.
“I’m real proud of the way our guys battled back and never quit.”
Sequim senior Corbin Webb drilled in a game-high 23 points while Gabe Carter pulled down 10 rebounds.
