SPORTS: Tired Port Townsend girls soccer team holds off Coupeville; other prep reports

PORT TOWNSEND — Jewel Johnson and Irina Lyons scored a goal each to spark the Port Townsend girls soccer team to a win over Coupeville on Saturday.

The Redskins won 2-1 after leading 1-0 at halftime.

Johnson scored 4 minutes into the game on a Natalee Taylor assist and Lyons scored the winning goal just before the ending whistle on an assist from Johnson.

“The heat and physical exhaustion after four games in six days were clearly taking their toll on us,” coach Colin Foden said.

“This was not the free passing display from previous games but a result that was ground out by 13 tired players.

“A good win with much appreciation for the efforts of freshmen McKenzie Ginther, Reilly Berkshire and Emily Slough. Outstanding performances by Nakaia Millman and Becca Stewart.”

Earlier in the week, Sequim beat Port Townsend 5-3 in a nonleague shootout at Sequim.

Johnson scored two goals in the game while Lyons had one.

“The third preseason game in four days was a real slugfest,” Foden said.

“Both teams battling for possession and both teams exhausted by the end of the game. Of the eight goals, some were real beauties.

“It was a close and hard-fought game with some fine displays from all of the Port Townsend defense and notably from substitutes McKenzie Ginther and Reilly Berkshire.”

The Redskins next host Olympic on Tuesday.
