SPORTS: Port Townsend sending six golfers to state tournament

TACOMA — Four players from the Port Townsend boys golf team qualified for the Class 1A state tournament.

The Redskins advanced to state from subdistrict competition Monday at Eagle Pride Golf Course, the old Fort Lewis course.

Two Port Townsend girls also qualified for state on the same day.

“This is the largest group of boys and girls I’ve taken to state,” Port Townsend coach Gabriel Tonan said.

The 1A state championships are set for May 25-26 at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland.

Ronnie Harrell will lead the boys after shooting an 82 for seventh place at subdistricts.

Other Port Townsend boys headed to state are Cody Piper, who was two strokes behind Harrell with an 84, Gabe Hensley with 88 and Sean Anderson with 90.

Anderson was in a six-way tie but advanced to state after winning a playoff hole.

The top 34 out of 68 boys earned state berths.

Two other Port Townsend players, Jake Von Volkli and Andy Jaohula, advanced to tri-district play Tuesday at Eagle Pride but did not make the state cut.

Grauberger to state

Jenny Grauberger captured fourth place at subdistricts Monday to lead the Port Townsend girls.

Alexa Russell also is going to state for the Redskins.

Grauberger shot a 94 for 18 holes to take fourth out of 40 golfers.

The second-year junior golfer will compete at state for her second year in a row.

Grauberger earned match medalist five times this season and claimed third place overall in the Olympic League.

Russell, meanwhile, took 12th place, shooting 103 and earning her second trip to state as a senior.

“My girls play well and I was confident they would be returning to play at state again,” Tonan said.
