SPORTS: Peninsula College men’s soccer beats Trinity; prepares for Tukwila tournament

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team shut out Trinity Lutheran College Reserve 3-0 in a non-counting scrimmage game Sunday.

The Pirates, 1-1 in scrimmage competition, next will join the Peninsula women’s soccer team at the 43-team NWAACC Soccer Friendlies tournament in Tukwila on Wednesday and Thursday.

To tune up for the NWAACC tourney, the Peninsula men scored two goals in the second half to bury Trinity.

Daniel Gonzalez scored in the first 10 minutes from a ball by his brother, Miguel Gonzalez.

Dean Gaynor scored two goals later in the game (at 51 and 72 minutes), assisted by Aaron Jeffery and Jacob Campbell, to put the game away.

“We played really well [Sunday],” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.

“Everybody got a lot of playing time and we were able to move players into different positions.”

Now Peninsula’s men’s and women’s teams are set for the NWAACC Soccer Friendlies at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.

Each team will play twice in the two-day tournament.

The Peninsula women will play Columbia Basin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Yakima Valley at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Peninsula’s men will take on Columbia Basin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Evergreen State at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Community College teams from all over the Northwest will compete in the NWAACC Soccer Friendlies.

The event starts at 9 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Friendlies preseason event started last year with one school in each of the NWAACC’s four regions hosting other teams from other regions.

This year, the event is combined into one big event with all participating teams playing at Starfire to start the 2011 NWAACC soccer season.

In addition to the great soccer action, the NWAACC Soccer Committee along with the Edmonds Women’s Soccer Team, has organized the 2011 Inaugural NWAACC “Friendlies” Food Drive benefitting Tukwila Food Pantry.

The goal of the food drive is to encourage participating teams and spectators to donate non-perishable items including food, undergarments and hygiene products to the community in which they will play.

The program is also designed to promote an attitude of service among athletes and coaches.

Each team is encouraged to bring a minimum donation of two cans/items per game per player and coach.

The top three participating teams will be announced at the end of the event.

Items requested include canned/prepackaged soup, including Ramen, Cup-O-Noodles, canned fruit, half-pound packages of rice or whole grains, undergarments sizes toddler through adult, hygiene items including toothpaste, soap, tampons, disposable diapers and other like items.

Tickets for the tourney are $3 per day, or $5 for both days.

“Success would be if everyone has a good time and we promote NWAACC soccer,” Highline athletic director John Dunn said.

“We want to have a first time out that we can build on to make this a cool, annual tournament going forward.

“Starfire is waving their usual parking fee so fans and schools will get free parking, and Baden is donating all of the soccer balls for the friendlies.”
