SPORTS: Montesano beats youthful Forks wrestling team; other prep reports

FORKS — A more experienced Montesano team beat youthful Forks 51-22 in a Southwest Washington League wrestling match Wednesday night.

“Montesano is fairly solid, they have someone decent at every weight,” Forks coach Bob Wheeler said.

“We don’t have much experience, just a few kids who have been with us a long time.”

Those veterans came through as heavyweight Tanner House improved to 18-1 with a pin and Tyler Cortani won by fall in 1:03 at 112 pounds.

Cortani improved to 12-6.

Cutter Grahn is now 15-5 after a major decision at 119 pounds and Dane House is 12-8 after winning by injury default at 125.

The Spartans next wrestle at the Bainbridge Tournament on Saturday.

POULSBO — The Roughriders came storming back to challenge for the win Wednesday night against a very tough Vikings team but came up just short.

Down 30-0 early on, the Riders (2-4 in league) held strong, taking a 36-33 lead late in the match. Two extremely close match-ups at the 103- and the 160-pound classes spelled the difference in this Olympic League meet.

Kacee Garner led the comeback for Port Angeles, pinning his opponent in just over one minute in the 145 match. Blake Johnson, wrestling at 152 pounds, won by fall in 2:30.

Brian Cristion had another pin at 171 pounds to help the Riders team crawl back into contention. Nathan Cristion (189 pounds) kept the barrage going for Port Angeles, winning by fall, as well.

In the heavyweight match, Sam Garland pinned his opponent in a grueling match-up that lasted nearly six minutes.

“Our young kids really stepped up and gave us a huge lift tonight,” Riders coach Erik Gonzalez said. “We never quit, never gave up for a minute.”

Port Angeles travels to the Bainbridge tournament Saturday. The Battle for the Axe, which was set for Saturday, has been postponed.
