SPORTS: Kingston knocks off Sequim in boys basketball action; other boys basketball reports

KINGSTON — So it comes down to this.

After 15 Olympic League games and months of practices, the Sequim boys basketball team will be playing for a coin flip when it travels to Port Angeles on Tuesday night.

The first-place Kingston boys basketball team knocked down 10 3-pointers en route to an 73-62 victory over the Wolves on Friday night.

The loss kept Sequim — already assured of a postseason berth — from locking up at worst the Olympic League’s No. 3 seed in the Class 2A sub-districts.

Instead, the Wolves (10-5 in league, 14-6 overall) can land anywhere between second and fourth among the league’s 2A teams after Tuesday night’s showdown with the Roughriders.

That scenario includes a possible coin flip to determine No. 2 seed if the Wolves beat Port Angeles on its home court.

“If this were for the league title or for the final playoff spot, we’d play it out,” Sequim athletic director Dave Ditlefsen said.

“Since this would just be for seeding [a coin flip is considered OK].”

Of course, all that could have been avoided had the Wolves found a way to knock off Kingston (14-1, 15-4) on Friday night.

Yet with Kingston getting double-digit scoring performances from four different players, including Zane Ravenholt (20 points) Richie Sander (17) and George Hill (16), that wasn’t to be for the Wolves.

“They shot the ball extremely well,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser. “We shot the ball decently in the first half, but we kept on living and dying by the 3 basically. That’s what we ended up dying by I guess you could say.”

Jason Brocklesby scored a game-high 21 points and Nick Camporini added 18 and Gabe Carer 16 for the Wolves.

CLALLAM BAY — The Red Devils (6-0, 16-2) continued their mastery of the Bruins while closing out the North Olympic League schedule undefeated Friday night.

Neah Bay’s Drexler Doherty shredded the Bruins for a game-high 30 points as one of four Red Devils to score in double figures.

Meanwhile, turnover problems once again plagued the Bruins, who gave the ball away 35 times in a game that saw them trailing 45-17 by halftime.

It was Neah Bay’s fourth double-digit win of the season against its archrivals.

“Neah Bay puts a lot of pressure on,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said.

“They watch the ball well and good a good jump on it. We weren’t ball faking and doing what the boys can do. I knew it was going to be a problem if they didn’t do that.”

Senior Kyle Hess had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the final home game of his high school career. Emmitt James added 12 points.

The Bruins were already locked into a loser-out pigtail game next Thursday at the Northwest District No. 3 (likely Tulalip) prior to Friday’s loss.

The Red Devils head into the 1B Tri-District double-elimination bracket as the top seed out of the NOL.

They will face the Northwest District No. 1 in Joyce on Feb. 12 at 2:45 p.m.

TACOMA — The Cowboys’ playoff hopes took a hit after Friday night’s 1A Nisqually League loss.

The loss denied the Cowboys (2-8, 4-14) a shot at making up ground with Orting (3-7, 4-11) in the standings.

That makes Monday’s game at Orting a must-win since Chimacum lost a coin toss to the Cardinals on Thursday for the fifth-place tie-breaker.

Fifth place will head to Port Townsend on Thursday for a loser-out pigtail playoff.

Bremerton 82, Port Townsend 64

PORT TOWNSEND – The Redskins (5-12, 7-14) had no answer for Bremerton’s Andre Coleman, who scored a career-high 36 points to lead the Knights to victory Friday night.

Bremerton (11-4, 14-5) had an explosive 23-point first quarter and Coleman made six 3-pointers in the first half, setting the tempo for the rest of the game.

“Coleman was cooking with gas,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.

“He was shooting it when he got off the bus.”

Seiji Thielk was Port Townsend’s leading scorer, rallying for 26 points while Jacob DeBerry added 19.

Despite the loss, Port Townsend is guaranteed of a playoff spot thanks to North Mason’s loss Friday night. That defeat negated any confusion there might have been concerning the Redskins’ playoff qualification.

The Redskins will host either Chimacum or Orting on Wednesday night in a loser-out pigtail for the West Central District’s No. 5 seed in the 1A Tri-District.
