FORKS — Forks held North Beach to two points in the fourth quarter Thursday night to win its second boys basketball game in as many tries this season, 38-32.
Braden Decker led the Spartans with 10 points and Colton Raben had nine in a game dominated by defense.
That end of the court is where Decker most impacted the game.
The senior grabbed 18 rebounds, including 16 defensive boards, and had five steals.
“Sometimes when you’re not shooting well, you’ve got to find other ways to win the game,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.
“In the fourth quarter, it seemed like [Decker] got every rebound.”
Gooding said some of his players are getting frustrated with their shooting struggles in the first two games of the season.
“I have confidence in them [starting to make shots],” Gooding said.
“We’ve only played two games, so we’re only going to get better.”
In their wins over Port Angeles and North Beach, the Spartans also showed they can win different styles of basketball.
They beat the Roughriders 57-44 in a fast, up-and-down game Wednesday night.
On Thursday, both the Spartans and Hyaks played zone defense that made for a much slower pace of play.
“That made it into a grind-it-out game,” Gooding said.
One of the reasons Forks held North Beach to two points in the final period, and just nine total in the second half, was because they blanketed Justin Chong.
Chong scored 10 points in the first half, but was held scoreless over the final two quarters.

BREMERTON — Quentin Phillips sank 26 points and Tarence Mosley added 15 as the Trojans rolled against the Roughriders in the first Olympic League game of the year for both teams.
The Trojans used a harassing, pressuring defense to force the Riders into turnovers and missed shots for the easy win.
Olympic led 55-20 at halftime and cruised to the win.
Miki Andrus led Port Angeles with eight points while Hayden Gunderson added seven.

PORT ANGELES — Maddy Hinrichs scored 15 points to help the Roughriders open the Olympic League with the win Friday night.
Hinrichs scored nine of her 15 in the first quarter to set the tone of the game. She was a perfect 3 for 3 on her 3-point attempts, a couple of them on assists from Macy Walker.
Olympic’s standout post player Ashli Payne was held to 16 points.
“Bailee Jones and Payton Lee defended Ashli Payne well, not allowing her to drive inside much,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.
“Our full-court defense was generally effective, allowing us to control the pace of the game for the first three quarters.”
The Riders (1-0 league, 1-1 overall) led 16-4 after one and 28-14 at halftime.
The Trojans fell to 0-1 in league and 1-1 overall.
Port Angeles next will host North Mason (0-1, 0-2)on Tuesday night.

PORT TOWNSEND — Jewel Johnson and Enani Rubio combined for 23 points to spark the Redskins to the Olympic League win over the Wolves on Friday night.
Port Townsend held the Wolves scoreless in the second quarter and to single digits in three periods to romp to the win in the first game of the year for both teams.
The Redskins led 22-8 at halftime and never looked back.
Caitlin Stofferahn led the Wolves with seven points.

QUILCENE — The short-handed Rangers came up short against the Eagles on Friday night.
Quilcene was down two starters, point guard Andrea Lara and forward Jerica Viloria, and had a bare bones roster of seven players available for action.
Sammy Rae led the Rangers with seven points while Ceare Williams scored six and Megan Weller and Sophia Knutzen each had five points.
The Rangers next host Eastside Prep on Monday.
