SPORTS: Ex-Mariner Boone to manage Victoria pro team

VICTORIA — Former Seattle Mariners second baseman Bret Boone has been hired as the manager for the Victoria Seals, a Golden Baseball League team.

The Golden Baseball League is an independent league with nine teams from Calgary to Tucson.

The position is Boone’s first-ever foray into professional baseball management.

“I’m very happy to bring Bret into our organization. He is a recognizable name that gives instant credibility to our team and will encourage people to come down to the ball park to see him and the team this summer,” said Seals president Darren Parker.

“We expect him to be a gritty manager who will get the respect of the players from the get-go and bring the best out of the players at this developmental professional level.”

The Golden Baseball League consists of a North Division with teams in Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, Victoria and Chico, Calif.; and a South Division with franchise in Long Beach and Orange County, Calif., Tucson and Yuma, Ariz., and St. George, Utah.

The Seals play at Royal Athletic Park, 1014 Caledonia Ave. The season begins May 21.
