SPORTS: Clallam Bay boys basketball team holds off physical Port Angeles C team; Crescent rallies to beat Sequim JV squad

PORT ANGELES — Emmett James ripped the nets for 24 points to lead the Clallam Bay boys basketball team to a nonleague win over the game Port Angeles C team Monday night.

Two other Bruins scored in double figures as Clallam Bay improved to 11-4 overall with the 68-61 shootout win over the Roughriders.

“It was a good win for us against a pretty physical young squad,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said.

Kyle Hess scored 12 points for the Bruins while Jacob Portnoy added 11.

James also had a team-high eight rebounds while Portnoy had seven rebounds and five assists.

“Portnoy had a pretty good all-around game for us,” Ritter said.

The Bruins made 15 of 19 free throws in the game that really helped out, according to Ritter.

“And we have been struggling with our free throws until this game.”

Mac Gao led the Riders with 16 points while Steven Lauderback and Hayden Gunderson scored 13 each.

The Bruins led 19-13 after one and 31-27 at halftime.

Clallam Bay next plays Wednesday at archrival Neah Bay.

JOYCE — Joel Williams sank 23 points to lead the Loggers to the nonleague win over the Wolves on Monday night.

“We played pretty well after we lost by three points to Clallam Bay in the game before this,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said.

“We rebounded well. We played hard.”

Sequim led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and 24-21 at halftime but the Loggers outscored the Wolves 33-20 in the second half to earn the victory.

Joey Barnes added 12 points for the Loggers while Anthony Pinza led Sequim with 13 points.

Crescent, 4-13 on the year, next plays the Port Angeles C team on Wednesday.
