Wrestling club season begins next month

PORT ANGELES — Sign-ups are underway for the Olympic Mountain Wrestling Club’s folkstyle wrestling season.

The season will begin with practice at Port Angeles High School from 5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1.

The folkstyle season is open to boys and girls from kindergarten through sixth grade.

There are two options: a noncompetitive folkstyle season from December through February, where participants receive a club T-shirt and practice Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m., for a cost of $35.

The competitive membership comes with a year’s membership, club T-shirt and team singlet rental.

Practices are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Port Angeles High School starting Dec. 1, 2014.

The $100 cost includes a USA wrestling card, which is necessary to compete in all tournaments, accident insurance coverage and a subscription to USA Wrestler magazine.

The competitive team will travel to select tournaments throughout both the folkstyle and freestyle/greco-roman seasons.

Jones honored

PORTLAND, Ore. — Port Angeles High School graduate Kiah Jones was honored by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this week.

Jones, a redshirt sophomore volleyball player at Central Washington University, received all-league honorable mention as an outside hitter.

Gymnasts qualify

PORT ANGELES — Klahhane Gymnastics’ Level 4 and 5 gymnastics teams recently qualified six gymnasts to the Washington Fall Compulsory Meet at the Scarecrow Scramble hosted by Grace Gymnastics.

The Level 5 team, led by qualifiers Anne Edwards and Zoe Smithson took second in the team competition.

Edwards medaled on all four events, taking second on vault and floor Exercise, third on balance beam, fourth on uneven bars and second all-around with a 32.35 total score.

Zoe Smithson had the highest individual event score, placing first on vault with a 8.9.

Smithson also took second on uneven bars, fourth on floor and third in the all-around.

Gracie Sharp was third on uneven bars, fourth in the balance beam and all-around events.

Emma Sharp placed fifth in the balance beam competition in the 11-12 age group.

Four gymnasts qualified for state in the Level 4 competition.

In the 8-year-old age group, Susannah Sharp and Jolene Varra had identical scores of 32.45.

Using the tiebreaker of the higher individual event score, Sharp received fourth in the all-around, and Vaara took fifth.

In the age 9 group, Kori Miller and Morgan Mattix qualified for state competition after finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.

The Level 4 team finished fourth in the team competition.

Storm King falters

SHORELINE — The Storm King Lightning gave up four goals for the first time and lost for the first time this season 4-3 to Seattle United West on Saturday.

Despite the loss, the Lighting are still on top of the boys 11 and under North Puget Sound League standings at 9-1-1 with one game remaining.

Ethan Knight led the team offensively with a goal and an assist.

Kristian Mingoy and Harrison Bell also scored, and Israel Gonzalez and goalkeeper Tyler Lawson had an assist apiece.

The Lighting can win the league title with a victory against Bainbridge at Haller Field in Sequim on Saturday at 1:45 p.m.

Port Angeles Swim Club

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Swim Club swimmers attended a swim meet at Bainbridge Island as one of the nine swim teams from Seattle and Olympic Peninsula area earlier this month.

A number of the club’s swimmers were among top finishers.

Milo Atwater, age 14, placed seventh in 100-yard freestyle.

Nadia Cole, 12, was first in 50-yard breaststroke, sixth in 50-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle.

Karsten Hertzog, 15, placed third in 100-yard backstroke.

Sage Hunter, 10, was fifth in 100-yard individual medley and sixth in 50-yard butterfly.

Sierra Hunter, 13, placed sixth in 100-yard butterfly.

Kenzie Johnson, 13, was first in 100-yard backstroke and fourth in 100-yard freestyle.
