Quilcene volleyball begins season with win

NEAH BAY — Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Class 1B state tournament last year, the Quilcene volleyball team began where it left off last year with a 3-0 win over Neah Bay.

The Rangers won Friday’s match by a score of 25-16, 25-16, 25-20.

Emily Hitt led Quilcene with 13 kills, six digs and four aces while serving 9 for 9. Katie Love served 12 for 13 with five aces and seven kills.

Sophomore Alannah Carron had four aces on 12 for 13 serving and 16 assists. Pearl Munn served 14 for 14 and a pair of aces, while Abbygael Weller had 10 digs.

“[We] played well together with strong serving at the line from all the players. Emily Hitt moved to the middle this year and put down 13 kills with excellent setting from Carron. Love had some key kills that got us out of some rotations,” said Quilcene coach Joni Crowell.

The Rangers will play at Auburn Adventist at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Kingston 3, Sequim 2

KINGSTON — The Wolves, coming off an appearance at the 2A state tournament last year, kicked off the season with a 13-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 8-15 loss Thursday.

“We started very slowly and were not passing in serve-receive very well. It took us that whole game to get moving and playing better,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.

Webber-Heilman said after some lineup changes in the second game, the Wolves started playing better. Kalli Wiker had a five-point serving run and Tayler Breckenridge had some key attacks.

Breckenridge led the Wolves with 15 kills and nine digs. Brittney Gale had 15 assists, seven digs and four kills, while Wiker had five aces and 13 assists.

Arlene Law had a good all-around match with two aces, six kills, four blocks and four digs. Isabelle Dennis served a perfect 9 for 9 with 13 digs.

Sequim (0-1, 0-1) visits Olympic at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls Soccer Vashon 4, Port Angeles 1

VASHON — In the first-ever girls’ soccer meeting between Vashon and Port Angeles, the Pirates got four goals from their midfielder Emily Levin in a 4-1 win over the Roughriders.

Vashon, which went to the state 1A Tournament last year, took a 2-0 lead into the half after a pair of goals from Levin. The Roughriders cut the score to 2-1 in the 45th minute when Sierra Robinson forced a foul in the penalty area on a breakaway. Shanzi Cosgrove converted the penalty kick for a goal.

Couldn’t capitalize

Port Angeles’ momentum didn’t last as Levin quickly scored on a header, then scored again in the 63rd minute.

“Vashon is a really good team. They made it to the 1A state tournament last year and have some of the better players we will see all year,” said head coach Scott Moseley.

“We chose these two top programs [Vashon and Klahowyna] to start our year with and obviously have some gaps to kill before league games start.”

Moseley said Port Angeles had as many shots and shots on goal as Vashon, but just placed their attempts right at the Pirates’ goalie.

Moseley named Shanzi Cosgrove and Sierra Robinson his offensive players of the game and Kyrsten McGuffey the Transition player.

Port Angeles (0-2, 0-0) next plays at Port Townsend at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
