PREPS: Sequim volleyball nets first win over North Kitsap in at least 10 years

POULSBO — Sequim overcame some home cooking and snapped a long-running losing skid to the Vikings in a showdown for second place in the Olympic League volleyball standings, 25-13, 17-25, 25-21, 25-18.

The win gives the Wolves (10-3, 10-4) the upper hand over North Kitsap (10-3, 11-4) with one regular season match remaining for each team Tuesday. Sequim plays host to winless Bremerton for senior night, while North Kitsap plays league champion Bainbridge (13-0).

“I’m going to have to do some investigating but I think it’s been more than 10 years since we beat North,” Wolves head coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.

“We looked at some of our past stats, checked out some film and saw that if we could serve away from their libero they could not pass very well. And we also ended up with 17 aces. We served tough. And we found that if we picked on the left side of the court their defense wasn’t as good. Their setter would have to run all the way over and another setter was shorter and not a good blocker.”

Webber Heilman said Sequim fought through some tough calls in the second set.

“There were some obvious double [hit] calls, but they just played and didn’t let it bother them,” Webber Heilman said.

“Between the girls screaming on the court and the girls screaming on the bench, this was a real team win. Everybody wanted it.”

Arianna Stovall led the Wolves at the net with 15 kills, two stuff blocks and six digs.

Kassi Montero served 20-for-21 with six aces, six kills and five digs.

Rose Gibson also had an all-around performance, serving 16-of-17 with four aces, eight perfect passes, 11 kills, five digs and a stuff block.

Sydney Clark added 13 perfect passes, served 12-of-13 with an ace and added five digs and a block.

Tiffany Lam played through illness and had 14 perfect passes, 15 digs and a kill.

Setter Kenzi Berglund went 14-of-16 with three aces, 32 assists, 12 digs and a block and Brianna Palenik added six kills and five digs.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders bumped the Knights 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 to earn the road sweeep Thursday.

“It was so fun to watch them play well, celebrate and love the game,” coach Alyssa Wetzler said.

Jordin Dunaway led the way with eight kills, two digs and an ace. Jazzmen Murray added four service aces, six assists and a kill; Josie Wood posted four kills and a pair of blocks and Kenzie Moses chipped in six digs, two kills and an ace.

The Riders will wrap their season Tuesday

“We will have our senior night next Tuesday versus Kingston,” Wetzler said. We will be losing 6 seniors this year; can’t believe it. Time flies when you’re having fun. They will be dearly missed! Heidi Leitz, Tatum Moses, Aubree Hebert, Josie Wood, Jazzmen Murray and Bridget Weed.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders were able to rest injured players and bring up some reserves who have earned varsity time in a win over the Knights.

“We used the match to get several Junior Varsity/swing players some playing time and to rest some starters who have nagging injuries,” coach Daniel Horton said. “We used it as an opportunity to become more well balanced. At one point we only had three juniors on the field, including Kennedy Rognlien in goal, and the rest were freshmen and sophomore.”

The match started strangely, with Bremerton scoring inside of the first two minutes.

“We couldn’t have had a worse start,” Horton said. “They scored off a weird, left-footed miscommunication goal. Nobody panicked or thought the game was in jeopardy.”

Horton said the team shook it off and knotted the score up at 1-1 five minutes later.

“Kedryn Descala scored off a Sophia Ritchie assist in the sixth minute,” Horton said.

“Then Lilly Anne Lancaster scored in the 38th, she forced a turnover then chipped the ball over the goalie. And in the 61st, Mariah Traband scored off an assist by Brooke Pierce.”

Horton said freshmen Stella Fradkin and sophomore Audrey Rudd contributed.

“Stella gave us some good minutes at striker and Audrey Rudd played good minutes in the midfield,” Horton said.

Port Angeles (8-5, 8-6) will host Kingston (9-4) in a showdown for third place in the Olympic League at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
