PREP SPORTS: Sequim girls soccer beats North Mason; other prep reports

SEQUIM — Makayla Bentz scored a pair of goals, and North Mason took care of the rest as Sequim beat the Bulldogs 3-2 in Olympic League girls soccer action.

With the game tied 2-2 in the game’s 79th minute, Sequim’s Leslie Cisneros kicked a corner kick that was knocked into the goal by a North Mason player, giving the Wolves their second win of the season.

Bentz’s two goals were assisted by Maeve Harris and Cisneros.

Saturday’s win moves Sequim (2-5) into a three-way tie for sixth place in the Olympic League with North Mason and Sequim.

The Wolves play at second-place Kingston (6-1) today.

Port Angeles at Bellevue Invitational

BELLEVUE — Port Angeles’ Willow Suess ran her best 5K race of the season, and topped the Roughriders girls team, at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Besting her teammates is noteworthy for the Riders No. 2 runner; that she achieved her best 5K time (21 minutes, 1 second) in Saturday’s rain and mud is amazing.

“Consider the conditions. Issaquah set a record for rainfall this Saturday, accumulating nearly 2 inches of rain in just a few hours,” Port Angeles coach Pat Durr said.

“The course had about 1-2 inches of rain throughout the 3.1 miles. Several areas were nothing but mud muck.

“Imagine puddle splashing for 3 miles.”

Runners were slipping, sliding and falling throughout the race.

“Coaches were nervous about kids doing the splits or something weird like that, and picking up an injury,”

“Willow fell face first into the mud, got up and continued to go. Willow is a brave runner.”

Other Port Angeles times in the girls varsity race: Elizabeth Stevenson (21:08), Annika Pederson (22:52), Astrid Schick (24:02) and Dove Lucas (24:29).

In the boys varsity race, Port Angeles’ Peter Butler led the way in his 5K heat with a time of 18:19.

Other Riders boys varsity times:

Simon Shindler (18:20), Evan Herbert (18:45), Tristan Butler (19:10), Hunter Dempsey (20:21), Cody Anderson (20:34), Mark Reid (20:31) and Forrest Clark (21:09).

“All in all, it was just terrible conditions, but strangely enough, the kids had a fabulously fun day,” Durr said.

“Nothing like being covered in mud at the end of the race. Several runners bathed in Lake Sammamish after their run to wash the mud and muck off of themselves.”

Port Angeles hosts Sequim and Port Townsend on Wednesday.
