PREP SPORTS: Schneider nets first-half hat trick as Port Angeles boys soccer beats Port Townsend; other area reports

PORT ANGELES — Tim Schneider nabbed a first-half hat trick as the Port Angeles boys soccer team posted a 6-1 victory over Port Townsend.

Schneider scored in the fourth and 24th minutes off assists from Wei-yan Fu, and then followed up on a shot for his third tally in the 26th minute.

Angel Rivero headed in a free kick from Vincent Ioffrida in the 28th minute, and Miki Andrus put the Roughriders up 5-0 at halftime with a goal in the 36th minute.

Well-rounded win

“[We] had a solid and well-rounded overall performance at Civic Field,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said following Tuesday’s game.

“[We] capitalized on early opportunities and took command of the game by halftime.”

Reserves saw the field for much of the second half for the Riders.

“Kenny Soule scored his first varsity goal as a freshman on a nice header off a corner kick from Ioffrida,” Saari said.

The Redhawks (1-4) avoided the shutout on a 74th-minute goal from Connor Chisick.

Port Angeles (3-0) opens Olympic League 2A play today at North Kitsap.

Port Townsend (1-4) visits Olympic on Saturday.

Kingston 2, Sequim 0

SEQUIM — The Wolves had chances offensively but couldn’t get the opportunities to stick in their loss to the Buccaneers.

Kingston scored its goals in the 28th and 33rd minutes of Tuesday’s match.

“On their first goal, they scored on a free kick where their goalie came up and took a long looping kick inside of our half and it bounced and they got it past us,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

The Wolves thought they had tied the game a minute later, but the equalizer was taken off the board.

“I thought we tied it up in the 29th when Hayden James had a header off of an Eli Berg free kick, but they called it offside,” Brasher said.

“We played a good second half and outshot them, but Adrian Espinoza and Liam Harris each hit the crossbar.”

Brasher praised Patrick McCrorie’s play in outside defense and said freshman Evan James did a good job in his first start filling in for an injured Thomas Winfield.

The Wolves (0-1-0, 1-2-1) visit Port Angeles (3-0) on Saturday.

BELFAIR — The Cowboys were limited to one hit in a loss to the Bulldogs.

“We are making good, solid contact at the plate,” Chimacum coach Andy Lingle said of Tuesday’s game.

“We are just hitting the ball right at people.”

Henry Lovekamp notched the lone hit, doubling and later scoring for the Cowboys.

Chimacum hung around until allowing seven North Mason runs in the fourth inning.

“Jonny Rogers pitched a solid three innings before he tired a little,” Lingle said.

“Two errors in the fourth combined with a couple walks led to a big inning that put it out of reach for us.”

Chimacum (0-4) hosts Klahowya on Monday, April 6.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders earned a small measure of revenge against the Eagles after Klahowya edged out Port Angeles for the league crown last season.

“It’s a little different scenario this year with their players,” Riders coach Mark Mitrovich said.

“They lost their No. 2 player to soccer and their number three isn’t playing this year, so they have some younger players.”

Alex Atwell was match medalist in Tuesday’s round, firing a two-over par 38 on the back nine at Peninsula Golf Club.

“He had two birdies and three pars, so it was a really solid round for him,” Mitrovich said.

Atwell topped Klahowya’s No. 1, Aaron Holliday, who carded a 40 to lead the Eagles.

Alex Brown notched a 41 for Port Angeles with a birdie and four pars.

Mason Jackson and Austin Peterson each posted scores of 43 with four pars apiece.

Logan Kovalenko added a 46 and Dane Bradow shot a 60 in his varsity debut for the Riders (3-0).

Port Angeles visits North Mason on Wednesday.

QUILCENE — After five rain-outs to start the season, the Rangers opened with a dominant performance against the Eagles.

Quilcene’s offense did take an inning to get going, however.

“For some reason, the girls were nervous, but they were able to get through it,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said of Tuesday’s game.

After a scoreless first frame, the Rangers plated 13 runs in the second inning and 12 more in the third.

“Everybody hit well,” Thompson said. “I think we had 17 hits.”

Sammy Rae and Bailey Kieffer combined on a five-inning no-hitter.

Rae struck out 10 batters in her three innings of work to earn the win.

Kieffer added two strikeouts in her two innings of work.

Quilcene (1-0) hosts the Port Angeles JV team Friday.
