PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles kept hold of second place in the Olympic League 2A Division with a 3-2 overtime win in a girls soccer match at Civic Field.
The Roughriders dominated possession throughout Thursday’s game and took a first half lead on two goals in two minutes.
“A well-practiced corner kick went to Delaney Wenzl whose pass was knocked in by Lola Del Guzzi-Flores, for her second goal of the season,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
“Two minutes later, Emilia Long crushed a 20-yard laser, her seventh of the season, that the Bulldog goalie tipped but couldn’t deflect.
Late in the half, two defensive miscues led to two North Mason goals to even the score just before half.
“We were pretty frustrated as we totally dominated the game and too lose focus for a moment before half set us back,” said Moseley. The ball was even more on the Riders side of the field in the second half as the home team outshot North Mason 12-0, but were unable to put one past a very quality goalie.
Three minutes into the sudden death overtime, Del Guzzi-Flores placed a perfect ball over the top of the Bulldog defense to a sprinting Wenzl.
“I just took a touch, looked up and saw Delaney making this perfect run so I saw the chance and decided to take it,” said Del Guzzi-Flores. On the receiving end, Wenzl said she “realized it was just me and the keeper. I made sure I didn’t kick it right to her and kicked it on the ground to the corner.”
It was Wenzl’s second game winning goal in two nights, having earned the winner versus Sequim on Tuesday night.
Moseley recognized the play of defenders Cheyenne Wheeler and Shanzi Cosgrove for their efforts throughout the night.
“Both defenders played smart, focused defense and brought positive energy when we needed it. They were a big reason we were able to slow down North Mason’s offense,” said Moseley.
PA’s record moves to 4-1 in league and 5-3 overall. They host North Kitsap on Tuesday.
