PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles’ depth sinks Port Townsend in golf match

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys golf team remained undefeated, narrowly beating Port Townsend in an Olympic League golf match at Peninsula Golf Club.

Depth was the difference on Tuesday, as the Redhawks’ top three golfers — Patrick Morton, Caleb Johnson and Jacob Madison — more than held their own against the Roughriders’ Cameron Fouts, Carson Wilder, Parker Elias and Royce Duncan.

But all six Port Angeles golfers shot 67 or lower, with their top four counting scores all below 60 to give the Riders a 222-227 victory.

“The guys all took more swings than they would’ve liked but the course was playing tough,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.

“There’s not much roll, so the course is playing long.”

Morton shot a 45 to lead all golfers, while the Roughriders were led by Fouts’ 50.

Wilder shot a 54 for the Roughriders, while Elias and Duncan each shot a 59. The Redhawks countered with a 55 from Johnson and a 57 by Madison.

Jonas Kongerslev shot a 63 for Port Angeles, while Skyler Cobb shot a 67.

“They all got a pretty good idea of what they need to work on,” Stockton said of his team.

“A couple of the guys who just started this year got to play in their first varsity match today. Good fun.”

For Port Townsend, Sam Boatman shot a 70 and Chris Durham a 75.

Port Angeles (3-0) next tees up against Chimacum today at the Port Ludlow Golf Club. Port Townsend (0-2) will host North Kitsap at 3 p.m. today at Port Townsend Golf Club.

Sequim 177, Klahowya 208

BREMERTON — Blake Wiker and Andrew van der Berg posted rounds of 43 at Gold Mountain Golf Club to earn medalist honors and lift the Wolves to a win over the Eagles.

Paul Jacobsen was just behind his teammates with a score of 44 in Tuesday’s match.

Josiah Carter and Liam Payne each shot 47 for Sequim (2-0).

The Wolves visit Olympic on Monday.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders came away with an important 2-1 penalty kick win on the road against the Knights.

Port Angeles entered the contest looking for their first league points after a disappointing overtime loss to Kingston last Friday night.

“It’s usually too early to say this was a critical game, but it’s a game we needed to get points from,” said assistant coach Scott Moseley.

In Tuesday’s game the Riders fell behind 1-0 on a Knights goal in the 34th minute.

“Their best player hit a 40-yard free kick that snuck just under the bar,” said Moseley.

Following a lineup switch in the 60th minute designed to generate more offense, Port Angeles responded with a flurry of chances, culminating in a Ben Schneider goal after a Grayson Peet through ball.

The Riders’ defensive back four of Cameron Butler, Andrew Borde, Hollund Bailey and Michael Scott played superb defense as they consistently cleared Bremerton’s long kicks away, according to Moseley.

After a scoreless overtime, the game progressed to penalty kicks to decide it. All four Riders shots — by Andrew St. George, Ben Schneider, Jesse Salgado and Andrew Methner — found the back of the net while the Knights missed two out of four.

Both teams had six shots on goal and each goalie made five saves for the game.

Port Angeles (1-1-0, 2-1-0) hosts Olympic at Civic Field at 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Sequim 3, North Mason 1

BELFAIR — The Wolves dominated on a soggy North Mason field, got yet another hat trick from Liam Harris and nearly got a shutout in a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs.

It was Harris’ third hat trick of the year as Sequim (2-0-0, 2-0-1) remained undefeated on the season. He has scored 10 goals in three games so far this year. He scored 11 goals all of last season.

“The score was closer than the game was,” said coach Dave Brasher.

Sequim had 22 shots to North Mason’s one and the Wolves forced North Mason goalie Dylan Abad into making 12 saves.

The Wolves’ first goal in Tuesday’s match came on a header by Harris in the 16th minute, assisted by Mathew Craig. Harris scored again in the 37th minute from 25 yards out. He was assisted by Sean Weber.

Harris scored the Wolves’ third goal in the 54th minute on a pass slotted up the middle by Craig, who picked up his second assist.

The Wolves came within a minute of a shutout, but the Bulldogs scored in the 79th minute. Nick Janikic and Navy Thomas-Brenske combined to play goalie in Sequim’s win.

Sequim (2-0-1, 2-0) hosts North Kitsap (3-0-0, 4-0-0) at 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Forks 3, Coupeville 2

FORKS — The Spartans got two goals from Samuel Gomez and evened their record at 2-2 with a 3-2 win over the Wolves.

Oscar Gonzalez, a freshman, added Forks’ third goal.

The Spartans have two losses to bigger schools in Bremerton and Lakewood, and has picked up two straight wins against 1A opponents.

Coach Joe Morton said his team played well in the Coupeville win and is enjoying playing on its new FieldTurf field.

“Our defense is shaping up tight,” he said. He said goalie Gabriel Terrones, just a freshman, is going to be a “super” goalie.

Forks will have a big test this evening, traveling to Port Townsend to play the Redhawks at 6 p.m. The Redhawks scored eight goals in their win over Chimacum Tuesday.
