Sequim soccer wins

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles volleyball team was swept by first-place North Kitsap 3-0.

The Vikings, undefeated in league, won 25-18, 25-11, 25-16 in Tuesday’s match, which left the Roughriders at 6-6 in Olympic League 2A Division play, tied for third with Kingston (6-6) , ensuring a tie-breaking match against the Buccaneers.

That match was played on a neutral court in Port Townsend late Wednesday.

Aeverie Politika led the Riders with three kills and two blocks against North Kitsap. Brennan Gray had nine digs and Callie Hall six assists. Nizhoni Wheeler served 11-for-12, Gray 8-for-9 and Hall was 7 of 8. .

Coupeville 3, Chimacum 1

COUPEVILLE — Chimacum was beaten 25-19, 25-21, 18-28, 25-12 on the road against Coupeville.

Cowboys coach James Shingleton said he felt his team played well.

“Even though they weren’t able to bring home the win, they fought to the bitter end,” he said.

Emily Thomas led the team in kills with 12, followed by Shanya Nisbet with 10. Kayla Gates and Chloe Patterson both had four blocks.

“Mechelle Nisbet was fiercely scrappy on defense leading the team with over 20 digs. Taylor Carthum was a standout defensively as well as contributing 30 assists in running the offense,” Shingleton said.

The Cowboys are at Port Townsend at 6:15 p.m. today for their fina Olympic League 1A Division game.

Montesano 3, Forks 0

MONTESANO — Forks was swept by undefeated league champion Montesano, setting up a possible three-way tie for second place in the Evergreen League 1A.

The Spartans lost Tuesday 25-23, 25-15, 25-13.

“The first game was exciting. Monte has been keeping a lot of teams to single digits. I was very pleased with my girls’ play,” said coach Patty Brandt.

Bailey Queen had three kills and five aces, while Julia Lausche had 11 assists. Lausche, Bailee Kratzer, Britney Dean, Rian Peters and Kierra Brandt were all 100 percent from the service line with the team serving 96 percent for the night.

Forks is at 3-4 in league and plays Elma (4-3) today.

If the Spartans beat Elma and Hoquiam (3-4) beats Tenino there will be a three-way tie for second place.

Girls Soccer Sequim 1, Kingston 0

SEQUIM — Sequim came away with a 1-0 win against Kingston that put them in solid position for a playoff spot.

The Wolves scored on a corner kick from Yanna Hoesel that found teammate Erin Vig, who kicked the ball in for a goal in the second half.

Sequim (6-5, 9-6) is tied with Port Angeles for third place in the Olympic League 2A Division. The third- and fourth-place teams both make district.

“The Wolves played a great game of possession and moved the ball up and down the pitch with fluidity. They battled hard for each other and came out on top,” said coach Derek Vander Velde.

“The entire squad played with excellent form last night for their final home game of the season,” Vander Velde said.

Sequim had 12 shots on goal, four saves, three corners and one indirect kick.

The Wolves have one final regular season game, on the road today against last-place Bremerton. If Sequim wins that game and the Roughriders lose a home game against a tough North Kitsap team today, the Wolves will end up in third place and the No. 3 seed at Districts and Port Angeles will be the No. 4 seed.

In any case, a Wolves’ win over Bremerton sends Sequim into the postseason.

The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will play Saturday at Franklin Pierce High Stadium in Tacoma at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. against the South Puget Sound League No. 6 and No. 4 seeds.
