PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Ice-cold Port Townsend hoopsters fall; Forks wrestlers win Mount Baker Invite

PORT TOWNSEND — An ice-cold night from the floor sunk Port Townsend in a 46-36 nonleague boys basketball loss to Vashon.

The Redhawks were unable to hit anything in the early going to trail 13-0 after one quarter and 22-8 at halftime.

“I looked back through our [score] book and we never had a zero-point quarter,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said of Thursday’s game.

“I was looking around in the stands for somebody could make a layup. We just couldn’t drop a peanut in the ocean in that first half.”

Detrius Kelsall led the Redhawks (2-0, 4-2) with 15 points. He also produced seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Webster said post Kaiden Parcher was the highlight of the night. Parcher dropped in 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

“He had some real nice inside moves and it was nice to see him get double figures,” Webster said. “He can score down there and we need that.”

Port Townsend will host its annual Crush in the Slush holiday hoops tournament on Thursday and Friday. The Redhawks will face Friday Harbor (5-3) Thursday and Neah Bay (1-3) on Friday.

JOYCE — Pressure defense and good rebounding helped the Loggers run past the Elks in a nonleague game.

“We distributed the ball really well, we played good pressure defense and we were pretty solid at limiting the Elks to one shot,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said of Thursday’s big win.

“There are a few things we need to fine-tune still.

but overall, I’m pleased with the guys and their effort level and execution.”

KC Spencer led the Loggers with 20 points and also swiped eight steals.

Wyatt McNeece had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Neil Peppard poured in 14 points and dished out five assists.

Peter Johnson nabbed eight steals and eight points for the Loggers (2-4).

“We were able to play up and down basketball and get a lot of playing time for the guys that we had available,” Ferrier said.

“We’ve had some sickness sweep through our team and we’re short a couple of guys so unfortunately we had to keep our experienced guys in the game a little bit longer than I would have liked. All in all it was a good performance for [us].”

The Loggers host Quilcene on Wednesday.

Wrestling Forks wins Baker Invite

DEMING — Forks dominated a mixture of Class 2B, 1A, 2A and 4A competition to win Mount Baker’s annual Justin Compton Invite.

Four Spartans won individual titles as Forks piled up 220 team points. Sultan was second with 155.5.

“This is a tournament that we have gone to for the past several years. It always has some 1A schools that are good for us to see, and there is also a mix of other schools that add some good competition,” Spartans coach Bob Wheeler said.

Champions for Forks included Garrison Schumack at 160 pounds, Kenny Gale at 182, Jack Dahlgren at 195 and Nate Flores at 285.

Wheeler said Gale had a great tournament, pinning his way through to first place.

Schumack controlled all three of his matches to win his title.

Dahlgren stayed unbeaten on the season, although his championship round match was cut short due to an injury to his opponent.

“We knew he would have a good challenge from Tanner Becher from Sultan,” Wheeler said. “Unfortunately, they were not able to finish the finals match. Jack was ahead, but Tanner injured his shoulder and was not able to continue the match.”

Flores, normally a 220-pound wrestler, competed at heavyweight.

“This was a very good move for Nate and the team,” Wheeler said.

“He would not have earned any team points at 220 since only one wrestler at each weight earns points. Moving to 285 not only earned Nate a championship, it earned the team 25 points we would not have had if he had stayed at 220.”

Sophomore Keith Thompson was second at 145 pounds.

Forks also picked up third-place finishes from Josue Lucas (106), Keith Kullander (138), Gavin Palmer (160), Josh Salazar and Shane Queen (tie at 170), Eden Cisneros (195) and Luke Dahlgren (220).
