PREP SPORTS: Rough road trips for Port Angeles and Sequim boys soccer

PA golfers sweep North Kitsap at Port Ludlow

BELFAIR — Port Angeles and Sequim both came away from road losses to No. 2 Bainbridge and bottom-feeder North Mason with heads hanging after the Roughriders and Wolves struggled in Tuesday’s Olympic League boys soccer contests.

Fighting for a playoff spot, Sequim dropped a disappointing 2-1 decision to the Bulldogs, a game in which the Wolves couldn’t get untracked all night long against a North Mason team that came in with just one victory on the season.

“Absolute deserved defeat,” coach Dave Breckenridge said. “We did not play soccer last night. It’s always tough when we take a two-hour bus ride and sit for another 1½ hours [JV game] before playing.

“Our boys had no energy what so ever. We were disconnected, and noncommunication was our enemy.”

Sequim (5-5) scored its lone goal on a penalty kick.

“We did get a well-deserved penalty on Colten Anderson,” Breckenridge said. “Colten took it and got his first goal of the season as a freshman. Unfortunately, it was the only positive in the match. I feel our biggest defeat is ourselves. Hopefully we can overcome that and continue a run for the district tournament.”

Sequim (5-5, 5-5) hosts No. 2 Bainbridge (9-0, 11-0) on Friday.

Bainbridge 12, Port Angeles 0

BAINBRIDGE — The Riders were routed by an undefeated Spartans squad that is up to No. 2 in the Class 2A RPI.

Port Angeles came out flat and allowed two early goals, coach Chris Saari said.

“It went downhill from there and PA faced a 5-0 halftime deficit,” Saari said. “[We] subbed all our available reserves at halftime and Bainbridge put up seven more goals in the second half.

“It was a disappointing performance against a really good team for Port Angeles. Having lost only 4-1 the first time at home to Bainbridge the Riders defense got exposed this time at Bainbridge. It was a good reality check for Port Angeles to know that they have a lot to work on before the end of the season.”

Reserves Leif Moody and Jordan Saluskin did well late in the game, Saari said.

“Senior Leif Moody did a good job at right back in the second half for Port Angeles with his work rate defensively,” Saari said.

“Sophomore Jordan Saluskin got in the game for the last eight minutes and came up with three or four big saves in a short period of time for PA.”

Port Angeles (6-3, 8-4) played at Kingston (1-8, 2-9) late Wednesday.
