PREP SPORTS: Barlow nets hat trick as East Jefferson chomps Gators

PORT TOWNSEND — Senior Simon Barlow notched a hat trick as East Jefferson stayed in the mix for a Nisqually League playoff berth after keeping Annie Wright off the scoreboard in a 5-0 boys soccer contest Tuesday at Memorial Field.

Rene Martin and freshman Alan Morales also contributed goals in the victory.

“We played pretty well overall. I wish we could have switched the field of play more,” coach Logan Stegner said.

“Chase Gardener, who has been a swing player for us all season, really stepped up during the game. Hopefully, that will be a big confidence boost for him,” he said.

The win sets up an intriguing Rivals-Seattle Christian (3-1-0, 7-2-3) matchup at Memorial Field at 1 p.m. Saturday with third place likely on the line if East Jefferson (2-2-1, 8-3-2) can beat cellar dweller Charles Wright today.

“We will need to increase our speed of play to get ready for Seattle Christian. It’s arguably our most important game of the season. We really want to get the third seed for districts and in order to do that, everyone has to step up a little more and stay more disciplined throughout the entire game,” Stegner said.

Olympic 1, Sequim 0

BREMERTON — The Wolves’ playoff hopes still exist, but Sequim will have to hope for some help in the chase for the Olympic League’s fourth seed after a disappointing 1-0 boys soccer road loss to the Trojans.

Olympic found the net on a Sequim own goal when a Trojans’ corner kick turned into a scramble inside the goal box in the first overtime period.

“[Goalkeeper] Nolan Valenzuela was in the process of reaching for the save and our defender deflected it with his hand to go in. It was a tough one to swallow,” said coach Dave Breckenridge.

We had our opportunity with a penalty kick that Max Stanford created by beating the back line into the box where he was taken down. Preston Kurtze stepped up to take and unfortunately missed. We had other opportunities but just couldn’t finish.”

Breckenridge said Olympic played its usual defensive style, keeping most of its players in defense.

“Yes, they parked the bus [defensively], but it was a combination of who wanted it the most, who had less injured players and questionable calls. Story of our season. The roller coaster of this season continues.

“We win against Port Angeles [on Friday], and with a little luck other teams lose and we make a district run. If we lose, we start preparing for next season. We have a talented group of boys that can do it, but they need to want it.”

North Kitsap 10, Port Angeles 1

POULSBO — The No. 6 Vikings scored early and often on the Roughriders in a road defeat Tuesday.

“The Vikings passing game was too much for Port Angeles who were missing captains Grant Butterworth and Matthew Miller,” coach Chris Saari said.

The Vikings put up five more goals in the second half before Port Angeles finally got a chance and scored in the 78th minute. The Riders played a ball into the Vikings’ penalty box and Oliver Martinez won the header challenge.

Riders goalie Gus Halberg, who also played on the field in the second half for 20 minutes, got his foot on the ball and nudged it to Kanyon Anderson.

“Kanyon finished the shot first time from 15 yards out to give Port Angeles something to celebrate on a tough night,” Saari said.

Leif Moody had a goal-line save late in the game for the Riders and earned defensive honors.

Oliver Martinez stood out for Port Angeles on offense with his strong challenges for the ball with his head.

Halberg provided a spark playing on the field in the second half and got an assist.

Port Angeles (7-4, 9-5) visits Sequim (5-7, 5-7) for the second leg of the Rainshadow Rumble derby at 7 p.m. Friday. The Riders beat the Wolves 2-1 earlier this season.
