PREP ROUNDUP: Sequim basketball girls stay alive for playoffs with win

FRIDAY HARBOR — The Sequim girls had a pair of victories this weekend, including a critical game against Bremerton to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Sequim beat Bremerton 54-26 on Friday, then traveled to Friday Harbor on Saturday, where they won a nonleague game 44-32.

Against Bremerton, Hope Glasser led the Wolves with 10 points, while Bobbi Sparks scored nine. Kalli Wiker and Slisha Grasser each added seven.

In the Friday Harbor win, Glasser again led the team with 11, while Jayda Julmist scored 10. Grasser chipped in eight, while Melissa Porter contributed seven points.

Sequim (3-6, 6-9) sits in fifth place in the Olympic League 2A Division, a game-and-a-half back of Olympic (4-4) for fourth place and the final playoff spot out of the league. The Wolves do still have to play league leader North Kitsap, but have a pair of games left against North Mason, one of the weaker teams in the league and Olympic. The Wolves likely need Olympic to lose three out of its final four league games — including the Sequim game — for the Wolves to have a shot at postseason. Olympic has one game against winless Bremerton it should win, but has two tough games against Port Angeles (8-1) and Kingston (5-3).

The Wolves next play at North Mason (2-7, 7-9) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Quilcene 28, Evergreen Lutheran 21

TACOMA — The Quilcene basketball girls won their fourth game in a row, 28-21 over Evergreen Lutheran, to clinch at least second place in the Sea-Tac 1B West League.

According to coach Brianna Weller, this game was up for grabs until the final three minutes. The Rangers went to a full-court offense, which the Eagles could not handle, resulting in several Quilcene turnovers.

“The girls, when they buckled down on defense, really rattled the Eagles. Credit especially Brittney Beukes and Abby Weller for their solid effort in that department. The team came away with 11 steals and converted 15 points off of Evergreen’s turnovers. Outsized, we also offensively outrebounded them as well (we had 18 to their 6),” said coach Weller.

Weller and Sydney Brown led the Rangers with 10 points each. Weller added six steals, while Brown had eight rebounds. Gina Brown had 10 rebounds, while Marissa Kieffer scored four points to go with four rebounds.

The Rangers have given up just 17.8 points a game over their winning streak, though coach Weller said the team can play better.

“It really was not a great game for us. We struggled at times on defense and on offense we missed too many easy shots in the paint (our field goal percentage was only 22 percent). We also need to keep working on seeing the floor and being more reactive versus robotic,” she said.

Quilcene (7-3, 9-7) next plays at Rainier Christian (6-3, 9-3) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Rangers still have a shot to win the Sea-Tac 1B West as they have a game left against 8-1 Mount Rainier Lutheran, though they need the Hawks to lose another game to tie them for the league title.

Ocosta 63, Forks 48

FORKS — Fourth-quarter foul trouble turned a close nonleague girls basketball game between Forks and the Ocosta Wildcats.

Already down starting post Chloe Leverington to an ankle injury suffered last Tuesday against Tenino, Forks’ Rian Peters and Ellie Kilmer had to spend time on the bench down the stretch.

“Ocosta managed to stay out of foul trouble but we got into some brutal foul trouble,” Spartans coach David Hurn said.

Kristi Raffelson scored eight of her game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter for Ocosta as the Wildcats turned a tied game after three quarter into a win.

“And one of their other tall girls scored eight as well in the fourth quarter,” Hurn said.

Jayden Olson led Forks with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. She scored 15 of her points in the third quarter.

The game was played in the school’s auxiliary gym due to a scheduling conflict with a children’s theater performance.

“It was a good atmosphere, both teams were playing a great game,” Hurn said. “The girls and I are just disappointed wecouldn’t close the deal. They battled and I’m proud of them, Ocosta is the real deal.
