PREP ROUNDUP: Riders’ runners triumph

BREMERTON — Port Angeles boys and girls cross country runners chased down Olympic League meet victories over North Kitsap at Olympic at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds on Wednesday.

“It was nice to get the win for both boys and girls today,” coach Rodger Johnson said. “The athletes are excited to see how they will stack up against the Olympic League next week [at the Olympic League Championships] in Port Townsend.”

Sophomore Lauren Larson won the girls race with a time of 19 minutes, 36 seconds as the Roughriders claimed four of the top five finishes in the 5-kilometer event.

Port Angeles totaled 19 points, far ahead of North Kitsap (53) and Olympic (117).

Junior Kynzie DeLeon was just behind Larson in second (19:44).

Both Riders’ runners bested North Kitsap’s Madison Zosa (19.48), the reigning Olympic League champion.

Kaylee Helgeson finished fourth for Port Angeles in 22:01 and Ella Holland was fifth (22.24).

Kathryn Guttormsen placed seventh (22:31) to round out the Riders’ top-10 finishers.

“Today’s course was pretty tough — it felt like we were up and down hills the whole time,” Port Angeles freshman Olivia Carroll said. “I really liked running through the woods — it calms me down and helps me focus and have fun.”

In the boys race, the Riders edged out North Kitsap 27-28 with Olympic third with 84 points.

Senior Cameron Butler led Port Angeles with a second-place time of 17:51.

Four other Rider boys made the top 10.

Thomas Shaw was fourth (18:14); Adam Borde placed sixth (18:20); Gabe Long seventh (18.21) and Josh Gavin was eighth (18.21).

All Olympic League cross country teams will compete in the league championship meet at Port Townsend Golf Course next Thursday with races beginning at 4 p.m.

Sequim wins races

BREMERTON — Murray Bingham and Riley Pyeatt ran to victories in the boys and girls races for the Wolves to lead Sequim to a pair of wins in an Olympic League dual meet at NAD Park.

Pyeatt won the 2-mile girls race in 13:04, more than a minute faster than second-place Savannah Knutson of North Mason (14:23).

Five other Wolves carved out top-10 finishes as Sequim totaled 23 points, beating out North Mason’s 36. Bremerton hosted the event but didn’t have enough athletes for a girls team score.

Jessica German was fourth (15:16); Eleanor Byrne ended up fifth (15:51); Aidyn Shingleton placed sixth (16:15); Emily Silve came in eighth (16:57) and Taylor Coleman was 10th (17:25).

Bingham (11:18) won the boys race by 10 seconds over North Mason’s Noah Hasselblad.

Jazen Bartee was fourth for Sequim (12:15), Koda Robinson was seventh (12:26) and Fischer Jensen ninth (12:50) for the Wolves.

Sequim totaled 32 team points, Bremerton was second with 42 and North Mason (49) rounded out the meet.

PORT ANGELES — The Riders won with youth and ran their record to 10-4 by knocking off a short-handed Bulldogs’ squad on Wednesday.

Port Angeles used a line-up where 10 of the 11 players were freshman or sophomores.

“This was a great opportunity for some of our younger players to get an idea of what a varsity match feels like,” said coach Brian Gundersen.

“I’m excited about the future of the program.”

Port Angeles concludes the regular season today at Olympic.
