Forks wins Sgt. Norton Meet

RAINIER — The Forks boys dominated 21 other schools to win the Sgt. Justin Norton Memorial Tournament after winning a pair of duals earlier in the week to win the Evergreen 1A League title for the sixth year in a row.

Forks had 204.5 team points in Saturday’s invite, far ahead of second-place Montesano’s 126.

The Spartans picked up five first-place finishes with Josue Lucas (113 pounds), Ariel Morales (126), Colby Demorest (160), Luke Dahlgren (220) and Nate Flores (285) all winning their weight divisions.

Coming in second were Eden Cisneros at 195 and Tristen Pisani at 220. Keith Thompson was third at 138 pounds, while Brett Moody (170) and Shane Queen (182) also came in third.

All of Forks’ third-place finishers were beaten by the champion of each division, so with different seeding the Spartans could have placed some wrestlers even higher.

“This was a good tournament for us,” said coach Bob Wheeler. “We are continuing to move our lineup around getting it closer to what we think it will being the postseason. I was happy with the way the majority of our wrestlers wrestled. We still have a lot of work to do to be ready for the state tournament.”

In a pair of duals last Wednesday, Forks locked up the Evergreen 1A championship by beating Tenino 64-12 and Elma 72-12.

Winning their matches against Tenino were Lucas, Colton Duncan (132), Thompson, Keith Kullander (152), Demorest, Moody, Queen, Pisani and Thomas Jackson (285).

Against Elma, winning their matches were Duncan, Thompson, Hayden Baker (145), Kullander, Queen, Dahlgren and Flores.

Forks next competes in Port Angeles’ Battle of the Ax, which begins at 5 p.m. Thursday.
