Softball Port Angeles 6, North Mason 5

BELFAIR — For the second straight game, the Port Angeles softball team had to rally from a deep hole.

And for the second straight game, Jada Cargo-Acosta was in the middle of the action.

The Roughriders got down 4-0 after the Bulldogs scored three in the first inning then added a solo home run in the second. Cheyenne Zimmer came in to pitch in the second inning and slammed the door on North Mason, allowing only one run over the final six innings while striking out nine batters.

At the plate, the Riders scored two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-4 lead. Cargo-Acosta had a big blow with two RBIs on a deep double off the fence to tie the game at 4-4

“I thought it was going out,” said coach Randy Steinman. Cargo-Acosta also had a huge 3-run home run in the opening game of the year last week to help spark a Riders’ comeback win over North Kitsap.

Zoe Smithson, who went 3-for-4 with a triple and a double, had an RBI in the sixth inning to give the Riders a 5-4 lead. Teagan Clark added an RBI double to give Port Angeles an insurance run, which the Riders ended up needing.

In addition to her heroics at the plate, Cargo-Acosta made two great defensive plays at shortstop to preserve the win, Steinman said. One was a barehanded grab of a ball with the bases loaded and two out. She threw the batter out to end that threat.

The final out was made by Lily Halberg, who made a catch running at full speed of a foul fly ball with two runners on to end the game, Steinman said.

“That’s two games in a row. These kids never give up,” Steinman said.

Port Angeles (2-0) next plays at Sequim at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
