PREP ROUNDUP: East Jefferson soccer learns from powerhouse; PA swimmers dominate

NOTE: This story was corrected that the Port Angeles swimmers competed at Olympic High School.

CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson girls soccer team went up against one of the toughest 1A teams in the state Saturday, dropping its game 10-1 to The Bush School from suburban Seattle.

Coach Robert Cantley said unbeaten Bush is ranked No. 6 in the state and that three of four teams from Bush’s conference, the Emerald Sound 1A League, are ranked in the top 10 among 1A schools.

“I told the girls to do their best and focus on their individual talents, and to watch the other team and you might learn something along the way,” Cantley said.

Cantley said that Rylee Spainhower-Oas played outstanding in goal. “She made some really good saves,” he said. He said Teri Wiley also played well on defense. East Jefferson’s goal was scored by Akili Clevenger.

Cantley said one of the lessons his young team learned “is ultimately not to be intimidated mentally or physically. They did well in moments. There were moments we were winning balls and making plays,” he said.

East Jefferson (1-6-1) returns to Nisqually League play Tuesday on the road at Cascade Christian (3-1-2).

The 100 freestyle featured another close contest as Asgeirsson and DuBois both set season-best times. Asgeirsson claimed second place, just .21 seconds behind Olympic’s top swimmer, while DuBois finished third, improving her previous time by more than three seconds.

In the grueling 500 freestyle, Kay-Sanders continued to impress, taking second place and shaving five seconds off her personal best.

St. Luise and Asgeirsson continued their strong performances in the 100 backstroke, taking first and second respectively, with both swimmers qualifying for district.

The night concluded with another personal best, this time from Shaw, who took three seconds off her time in the 100 breaststroke to finish first and secure a spot at districts. Teammate Mia Francis followed in second place.
