PREP ROUNDUP: East Jefferson soccer beats PA on penalty kicks

Sequim golf team shoots a combined 151

PORT ANGELES — East Jefferson earned its first win of the season with a late goal in regulation and a 5-4 triumph in penalty kicks over the Riders.

“East Jefferson and PA had an end-to-end game with both teams creating good chances to score throughout the game,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said. “East Jefferson passed the ball well and controlled the majority of the possession early in the game.”

“This was definitely pretty significant. I can’t remember the last time we’ve beaten Port Angeles,” said East Jefferson coach Robert Cantley.

Cantley said East Jefferson had a short bench because of injuries.

“They just ran themselves into the ground and earned the tie and won the shootout,” he said.

Cantley has seen a lot of growth in a team that struggled early, losing a couple of games by lopsided scores. The scores have been getting tighter and tighter the past couple of weeks.

“The big thing I’ve been hammering home to them is they have to have belief in themselves,” he said.

Saari said the Riders broke through in the 67th minute when Porter Litle slipped a pass through to Dayton Williams in behind the East Jefferson defense.

“Dayton carried the ball in on the right side of the penalty box and placed an inside-of-the-foot shot to the far post side netting. It was another quality finish from Dayton and his sixth goal on the season.”

Saari said Port Angeles was a couple of minutes from finishing the game off, but allowed several consecutive corner kicks, the last of which East Jefferson scored on in the 78th minute.

Taj Watson scored the goal for East Jefferson with the assist going to Mark Anderson.

Two scoreless five-minute sudden death overtime periods followed, with East Jefferson hitting all five penalty kicks to take the win.

Hitting their penalty kicks for East Jefferson were Aidan Halpin, Elias Herman, Yarrow Dean, Anderson and Connor Scanlon.

Haven McMillan earned the win as the keeper.

Saari said Williams was his offensive player of the match, Keane McClain was the team’s defensive player of the match and Nova Raupp was praised for his play in transition.

East Jefferson (1-6) next hosts Klahowya at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Field in Port Townsend.

Port Angeles (3-5) played Sequim on Saturday, losing 4-1 (For a story, look in Monday’s sports section) and next plays at home at 6:45 Tuesday against Olympic.

SEQUIM — The Wolves improved by 20 shots over their previous best team score of the season in a win over the Knights on the front nine at Cedars at Dungeness.

“So many individual performances stood out… none bigger than medalist Ben Sweet making three birdies on his way to shooting a 1-under-par 35,” coach Sean O’Mera said.

“Dominic Riccobene and Pryce Glasser each shot 38, both hitting the green in two and making an easy two-putt birdie on the third hole. Pryce’s round is especially good when considering he didn’t play his best two days ago.

“Garret Hoesel turned in his best round of the year, shooting a 40 that included an incredible 1-under-par through three holes stretch to start his match.”

Despite both of their scores not counting for the team portion of the match, O’Mera said both Cole Smithson and Truman Nestor played really well.

“Cole, playing on short notice due to an injury of another player, shot his career-best round [45],” O’Mera said. He hit the ball beautifully all day, including almost making an ace on hole No. 4 where he hit a 7-iron that landed inches from the hole and rolled to 8 feet. Truman had some great shots as well on his way to a round of 50.”
