PREP PLAYOFF BASKETBALL: PA girls get 21 from Jaida Wood in district championship win

TACOMA — The Port Angeles girls won the West Central District III 2A Tournament championship thanks to their stifling defense and a monster game from Jaida Wood.

Wood hit five 3-pointers, scored 21 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had three blocks as the Roughriders beat White River 53-32.

“But perhaps as important was her defense inside, avoiding fouls for the most part, contesting shots inside and pulling down rebounds,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

In the boys West Central District III Tournament, the Roughriders’ season ended with a heartbreaking 51-48 loss to Olympic on Saturday night.

Back to the girls game, Madison Cooke had a double-double with 10 points and 18 rebounds, while Bailee Larson had eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.

“The victory was a total team effort; all eleven players either scored or pulled down rebounds,” said Poindexter.

The Roughriders (20-3) didn’t allow double figures in points in any quarter.

“Both teams showed the wear and tear of three games in three days. White River’s 32 points was the result of a combination of our effective defense combined with an off-shooting game by the Hornets,” Poindexter said.

The game was not as close as the final score, as the Red Devils were up 44-25 at the half and 61-38 after three quarters.

Green hit five 3-pointers and shot 8 for 12 from the floor. Courtney Swan also scored 15 points, while Cei’J Gagnon had 16 points and nine rebounds.

There was no championship game for the Tri-District Tournament as it was canceled due to delays caused by the snowstorms last week. Neah Bay will be a top seed at the state 1A tournament.

Cascade Christian 46, Chimacum 23

TACOMA — The Chimacum girls weren’t able to get out of a very difficult West Central District III 1A Tournament, falling to Cascade Christian 46-23 in their season finale.

The tournament had the No. 1 (Bellevue Christian) and the No. 6 (Annie Wright) 1A teams in the state and only two teams from the West Central District make it to regionals. That means, in order to make it to regionals, Chimacum would have had to beat one of those teams.

The Cowboys lost to Annie Wright 77-21 Friday and coach Trevor Huntingford thought that loss was still bothering his team Saturday against Cascade Christian.

“I think the Annie Wright buzzsaw got in our heads,” Huntingford said.

Huntingford said the long layoff for Chimacum, plus an added layoff caused by snowstorms, also didn’t help. “We did not see a basketball court [for practise] for five days,” he said.

Still, it was a very successful season for the Cowboys, who won their first-ever Olympic League 1A championship, went undefeated in league at 6-0 and finished 13-7 overall.

“We met an enormous number of goals and had a lot of school firsts. This is a special group of kids,” Huntingford said. “It’s kind of tough to close this one out.”

Maddie Dowling and Mia McNair each led the Cowboys with seven points each.

Boys basketball Olympic 51, Port Angeles 48

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles boys couldn’t beat a team three times, twice in two days.

After beating Sequim for the third time of the year on Friday, the Roughriders went up against Olympic on Saturday in the West Central District III 2A Tournament for a chance to get into the 2A Regionals. Olympic, which lost twice to Port Angeles this season in league play, won 51-48.

The loss ended Port Angeles’ season with a record of 18-6. The Roughriders won the Olympic League 2A Division championship outright by beating North Kitsap two games out of three.

Olympic (13-11) makes it to regionals despite finishing fourth in the Olympic League 2A.

Muckleshoot 69, Neah Bay 58

TACOMA — The Neah Bay boys had their eight-game winning streak snapped by Muckleshoot 69-58 in their Tri-District 1B Tournament finale, but it doesn’t matter, as the Red Devils have already qualified for the 1B regionals.

Sean Bitegeko led the Red Devils with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Keith Johnson had 14 points, while Cameron Moore and Jay Brunk each scored 12 points.
