PREP HOOPS: Quilcene girls beat Seattle Lutheran, Ranger boys fall

QUILCENE — The Quilcene basketball girls won their second straight league game with a 37-14 win over Seattle Lutheran.

The Rangers shot 83 percent from the free-throw line, had just 14 turnovers and made 17 steals to dominate the 2B Saints. Quilcene scored 17 of their points off Saints’ turnovers.

The Rangers blew open the game by outscoring Seattle Lutheran 20-2 over the second and third quarters.

Abby Weller led all scorers with 18 points. Sydney Brown had a double-double for the Rangers with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five steals, while her sister Gina Brown had six points and 12 rebounds.

“Brittney Beukes was a 5-3 dynamo on defense and rattled the Saints,” said coach Brianna Weller. Beukes finished with four steals.

The Rangers have given up just 26 points in their past two games. Quilcene (5-3, 7-7) looks to stay in second in the SeaTac 1B League, traveling to Wednesday to play Tacoma Baptist at 6 p.m. today.

QUILCENE — The youthful Rangers fell at home to the 2B Saints.

“We did OK. They’re a bigger division, they’re a little bit more athletic than we are,” said coach Richie French.

French said teams are making a point of it to press the Rangers, who are starting two freshmen and are young at the guard positions. He said his team can break the press, “but we aren’t able to manage it for an entire game.”

Against the Saints, the Rangers had 37 turnovers.

French said the Rangers are getting better, playing good on both ends of the court in half-court situations. The team is also rebounding well. But, the Rangers, who lost six seniors from last year, need a second scorer to step up to support their top scorer Olin Reynolds.

“We lost a lot of firepower,” French said.

Quilcene (0-8, 1-12) next plays at 7:30 p.m. today at Tacoma Baptist.
