PREP HOOPS: Quilcene, Chimacum girls win; Forks, Port Townsend boys win

KIRKLAND — A shorthanded Quilcene girls’ basketball squad managed to fend off Puget Sound Adventist 38-29 on the road for the Rangers’ first Sea-Tac 1B League win of the season.

The Rangers were missing two players — Harmony Shulz and Madison Coffey — then battled foul trouble with Abby Weller, Gina Brown and Katie Love, who all played with four fouls in the Tuesday night game.

“Any time you take a couple of your starters and have to sit them for substantial periods of the game, it definitely causes some concern and changes the way [you] attack and strategize against [your] opponent. The bright spot in this one was the girls were able to pull it together and hang on for the win,” said coach Brianna Weller.

Weller said that Alexis Gray “was the glue that held us together.”

“Gina Brown energized us as well with her strong rebounding and hustle after the loose balls. This kid isn’t afraid of contact. She gets after it and loves the physical assertiveness of the game,” Weller said.

Weller said the Rangers’ foreign exchange student, Natalyia Namjausuk, played a lot of minutes tonight to substitute for the girls in foul trouble.

“She did a great job of hustling up and down the floor and did a nice job on defense,” she said.

Love led Ranger scorers with nine, Gray added seven and sisters Gina and Sydney Brown each scored six.

Quilcene (6-3, 1-1) next plays at Auburn Adventist at 6 p.m. today.

Chimacum (6-4, 1-2) next hosts Coupeville at 6 p.m. Friday for an Olympic League 1A Division game.

“The girls did an excellent job of playing defense tonight from start to finish. We did an excellent job of handling their pressure and executing in the first half in particular. We lead from wire to wire which was great,” said soach Trevor Huntingford.

The Redhawks got balanced scoring with five players with nine points or more. Detrius Kelsall led the Redhawks with 13, while Berkley Hill scored 12, Kaiden Parcher 11, Noa Montoya nine and Seth Spencer nine.

Coach Tom Webster said his team played a good defensive game in what turned into a physical matchup with the Wolves. The Redhawks held the Wolves to only 2 points in the first quarter, then they exploded for 22 points in the fourth to blow the game open.

Spencer hit three 3-pointers for the Redhawks.

“It’s a road league win. You gotta take care of business on the road,” Webster said.

Forks also got 14 points and 12 rebounds from Cole Baysinger and three 3-pointers and 12 points from Cort Prose and nine points from Parker Browning.

Forks got up 44-19 at the half, then cruised in the second half.

“It was good to start league play with a win in their house,” said coach Rick Gooding. Gooding said Baysinger and Adams both had good games on both ends of the court. Most of Baysinger’s rebounds came on the defensive end, whiule Adams was able to get his hands on the ball on the offensive end when Elma was doing everything it could to keep the ball away from him. He said it was Adams’ best game of the year.

“I can’t say enough about those guys,” he said.
