PORT TOWNSEND — Alex Atwell posted a one-over-par 36 to earn medalist honors and propel Port Angeles to a 208-239 Olympic League boys golf victory over Port Townsend.
“That’s outstanding in those conditions,” Port Angeles coach Mark Mitrovich said of Atwell’s round, which included one birdie and six pars.
Tuesday’s nine-hole match was played at Port Townsend Golf Club in a mixture of wind, sun and rain.
Alex Brown was next with a 40, including a team-high two birdies, for the Roughriders, followed by Mason Jackson’s 43, Micah Needham’s 44 and Austin Peterson’s 45.
The top five individual scores are counted.
Avery Koehler added a 47 for Port Angeles.
“All players were in the 30s and 40s, which is where we want to be [at this point in the season],” Mitrovich said.
“It was nice to see them play well under those [weather] conditions.”
The Redskins were led by the rounds of 45 carded by sophomore Austin Khile and freshman Patrick Morton.
Keegan Khile and Ben Rolland shot 49 apiece and Lucas Foster and Jack Bishop each had rounds of 51.
Both teams are off until after spring break.
Port Angeles plays its first home match of the season against Olympic on Tuesday, April 8, while Port Townsend hosts Kingston on Thursday, April 10.
Sequim 200, Olympic 224
SEQUIM — Despite torrential rainfall, the Wolves scored low and knocked off the Trojans in a match at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.
Travis Priest earned medalist honors for Sequim after shooting an even-par 37 on the Cedars front nine, edging teammate Jesse Francis’ 38.
Anthony Pinza carded a 40, Jack Shea a 42, Alex McCracken tallied a 43 and Henry Markham shot a 49.
“We had about three rain squalls come through, a little wind and the greens had been aerified,” Wolves coach Bill Shea said.
“The kids all played great. [I’m] very impressed with their performance, especially considering the elements.”
Sequim hosts North Kitsap on Tuesday, April 8.

Port Angeles def. Port Townsend
PORT TOWNSEND — The Roughriders picked up a win over the lone Redskins golfer at Port Townsend Golf Club.
Port Angeles senior Dana Fox birdied her final hole of the match to finish with a five-over-par 40 and was the match medalist for the second consecutive time.
Senior Kylee Jeffers and sophomore Hannah Almaden each shot eight strokes better than their total scores from the previous match with a 54 and 61, respectively.
“[The girls] showed significant improvement as a team. With a total of 277, this was 20 shots better than their total for the first match last week at Whitehorse Golf Club,” Port Angeles coach Jacob Lippold said of the Riders.
Other Riders’ scores were Greta Gieseke with a 59, Chloe Brown a 63 and Monica Gasper a 66.
Port Townsend’s only player, Greta Gamble, is new to the game and scored 70 in her first-ever nine-hole match.
Sequim 266, Olympic 298
SEQUIM — Freshman Alex McMenamin made two birdies and finished with a one-over-par 38 on the to lead the Wolves to a win over the Trojans.
McMenamin earned medalist honors for the second straight match for the Wolves (2-1, 2-0).
Brianna Kettel was next with a 48, Cecilee Wech posted a 58, Kailee Price and Megan O’Mera had rounds of 61 apiece and Kelly Anders shot a 69.
“The weather was horrible with Florida-style rain coming down through most of the match,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said.
