PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim bares its teeth in opener

SEQUIM — The game of the week was in Sequim on Friday night, with the Wolves showing that, with a senior-heavy squad, they might be rising up after a couple of slightly down years.

The Wolves beat the Spartans 35-26 in a wild shootout. Sequim’s Zeke Schmadeke had 174 yards rushing on 22 carries and two touchdowns, while teammate Liam Wiker had 21 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Schmadeke also threw for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Forks’ Bubba Hernandez had 129 yards rushing on nine carries and another 80 yards passing. The difference came down to a 14-0 third quarter for Sequim.

Sequim hosts Franklin Pierce on Friday while Forks plays another Olympic Peninsula rival in Port Angeles. That game is in Forks.

Mount Baker 49, Port Angeles 22

A young Port Angeles squad that graduated 14 seniors off last year’s team got off to a rough start in its opener against Mount Baker, with numerous bad snaps and four turnovers in the first half. The Mountaineers got up 42-0 at the half.

Once the Roughriders settled down, they did much better in the second half, taking care of the ball and shutting out Mount Baker over the final 20 minutes of the game. Jude Wallace had two long touchdown runs of 53 and 69 yards while Ricky Peterson had an interception and a 64-yard touchdown run. The Riders look to build on that positive second half as they play another road game Friday at Forks.

Neah Bay 78, Wahkiakum 24

As expected, the Neah Bay Red Devils showed they are going to be a frightening force to deal with for their 1B opponents. Neah Bay got five rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown from its senior leader Jodell Wimberly and scored 11 touchdowns total against the Mules, who were a 2B program last year. Neah Bay showed they are a serious state champion contender.

Neah Bay also picked up a forfeit win over Charles Wright to go to 2-0 on the season. The Red Devils have a big game at 4 p.m. Saturday in Everett against Liberty Christian. Neah Bay has beaten Liberty Christian two straight years in the state playoffs.

Quilcene 38, Lummi 18

Quilcene got big games from Andrew Perez, Robert Evans and Tyler Beukes in getting out to a 31-0 lead on the Lummi Blackhawks, going on to win 38-18. Perez threw for two touchdowns and passed for two others. Evans had two long touchdown runs and finished with 105 yards rushing, while Beukes led the team with 14 tackles.

Quilcene travels all the way to Concrete to play a Saturday game on the road, looking for revenge from a loss last season to the Lions.

A rebuilding East Jefferson team struggled in a 68-0 loss to Granite Falls, while Crescent started 1-0 with a forfeit win over Muckleshoot Tribal.

East Jefferson will get to take a couple of ferry trips, playing on the road against Friday Harbor at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Also, the Clallam Bay Bruins begin their 6-man football schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday, hosting Easton. The Bruins have nine games scheduled with four of them in Clallam Bay.
