PREP FOOTBALL: Hobbled Quilcene’s season ends with defeat to Twin Valley

ABERDEEN — Quilcene was battered, bruised and defeated by Twin Valley 62-34 in the first round of the Class 1B state playoffs at Stewart Field.

“It wasn’t real fun,” Rangers coach Byron Wilson said. “We got a ton of injuries in the first quarter.

The most damaging injury was to star running back Colten Pol, who hurt his ankle in the opening period and was used sparingly as a ball-carrier the rest of the game.

Despite that, Pol still managed to gain 188 yards on 11 carries and rush for two touchdowns, including a 52-yard in the third quarter on his ailing ankle.

The senior was so hobbled that Wilson pulled him from the game in the fourth quarter.

“People were catching him, and that never happens,” Wilson said.

“Had he been full health, I would have just turned him loose.”

Fullback Trison Williams also was hampered by injury, so the Rangers were forced to pass more than usual.

Quarterback Eli Harrison finished with 144 yards passing and two scores, both to Williams. Harrison also ran for a touchdown.

Quilcene finishes the season with a 7-3 record and its first state berth in a long time.

“After all the studs were lost last year, I think nobody believe we would get as far as we did,” Wilson said.

For Twin Valley, quarterback Kobe Kalama rushed for 223 yards and five touchdowns.

The Wolfpack’s reward for beating the Rangers is a date with top-ranked and defending champion Neah Bay later this week.
