PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Neah Bay sweeps Clallam Bay; Crescent splits and Port Townsend beats North Mason

CLALLAM BAY — Neah Bay absorbed Clallam Bay’s best shot early, but the Red Devils made certain there would be no upset with a big offensive output after halftime in a 64-45 girls basketball win over the Bruins at home Wednesday.

Clallam Bay started strong, up 19-12 after one quarter thanks to eight first-quarter points from Hannah Olson. And the Bruins and Red Devils were knotted at 23-all at halftime before Neah Bay got going offensively.

The Red Devils matched their first-half offensive output in the third quarter as Courtney Swan scored seven, Laila Greene sank two 3-point baskets and Patience Swan scored six of her game-high 19.

Patience Swan ended up with a double-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds, seven offensive, along with two steals and two assists.

Courtney Swan also had a big night with 15 points, eight assists and six steals.

Greene ended with 14 points, including 4 of 10 3-point shooting, and seven rebounds.

Oceanna Aguirre added nine points, nine rebounds, five steals, three assists and a block for Neah Bay (8-0, 15-2).

Cedar Johnson had two 3-pointers and finished with 14 to lead the Bruins. Miriam Wonderly and Olson each added 12 points for Clallam Bay (5-3, 10-8).

The Bruins wrap their North Olympic League schedule at Chief Kitsap tonight.

Clallam Bay will play a Tri-District Tournament game against the District 2 No. 5 seed on Feb. 9 with time and location to be determined.

Neah Bay hosts Crescent tonight.

The Red Devils, No. 4 in the Class 1B RPI, will host a Tri-District game Feb. 12, likely in Port Angeles.

JOYCE — Crescent coach Kelly Serrianne said her five-player team had a standout game despite having to play the entire contest without a break.

“Senior Jasmine O’Neel played an outstanding game on senior night, draining eight points and pulling down 20 rebounds and two steals,” Serrianne said.

“Brand new to basketball, freshmen Cheyanne Green shined on the court. This was Cheyanne’s best game yet and exactly what she needed to gain confidence in herself.”

Serrianne said Green had a great drive to the hoop that ended with a left-handed lay-in that was quite impressive for such a novice player. She led the team with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Point guard Chloe Mandeville added five points and did a great job moving the ball and seeing down the court, according to Serrianne.

Freshman Mackenzie Belford added five points and was attacking the basket, driving to the hoop and drawing fouls against the aggressive Bears.

JOYCE — Minus some bumpy portions of the fourth quarter, the Loggers controlled this game the whole way, leading the Bears from start to finish to pick up a North Olympic League win.

“We were able to get out in front early and we never lost the lead,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said. “It was a physical, chippy game, but my guys really kept their heads and we managed to squeeze out another win.”

Ferrier was pleased with his team’s rebounding and defensive performance.

“As a team [we] grabbed 38 rebounds and won the rebound battle against a bigger team,” Ferrier said. “Fantastic team rebounding effort. [And] 37 points defensively is fantastic, I’ll take that.”

Ferrier also had praise for his two seniors, Noah Leonard and Kylan Scheid.

“What a great couple of young men,” Ferrier said. “Last regular season home game for them and they were both played huge roles in the win.”

Two Redhawks acheived double-doubles in points and rebounds.

Noa Montoya had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Nico Winegar added 17 points and 12 boards.

“Nico had a couple of And-1 plays in transition and was 7 of 7 from the free throw line,” Webster said.

“We had eight 3s. Noa had four and Cole Crawford had three 3s in the first half, he kind of carried us.

Port Townsend (3-2, 9-7) wrapped its regular season at Klahowya late Thursday.
