PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Neah Bay girls run past Chimacum

CHIMACUM — Despite the long bus ride to Chimacum, it was Neah Bay that had all the energy in the early going on its way to a 57-30 nonleague girls basketball win over the Cowboys on Wednesday.

In a matchup of teams that like to produce pressure defensively, the Red Devils raced to a 35-13 halftime advantage behind seven second-quarter points from Lalia Greene and six from Gina McCaulley.

Greene led all scorers with 16 points and also added eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

McCaulley added seven steals and three assists to go along with her six points.

“This was not the game I think we expected and it wasn’t the game Neah Bay expected either,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said. “We were flat to start this game and just seemed to lack energy early on defensively. Offensively, early we got a lot of great looks but just didn’t convert on the open looks we created.”

Huntingford said he expected a really good matchup with Neah Bay, but the slow start was too much to overcome.

“… With us being sluggish to start and not converting our offensive opportunities in the first quarter, we quickly started losing ground to them,” he said. “By the time we hit halftime they had control of the game and we just never really got it going.”

Maddie Dowling led Chimacum with eight points and Jada Trafton scored six.

“In the second half we were a little better defensively, but we had fallen back by so much by then we couldn’t make up any ground,” Huntingford said. “We really didn’t look like ourselves at all tonight and that is one we will just have to put behind us and be ready for today’s matchup with Port Townsend.”

The Cowboys (2-0, 5-6) host Port Townsend (1-1, 4-6) tonight at 7:15 p.m.

“Neah Bay deserves the kudos they are getting this year as they are reloaded and a great looking team,” Huntingford said.

The Red Devils (8-1) open North Olympic League play tonight at Crescent.

SILVERDALE — The Redhawks rolled out to an 18-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised to an Olympic League 1A Division win over the Eagles.

“Defensively it felt like it really came together,” Port Townsend coach Scott Wilson said. “We hustled, we showed intensity, our help-side defense worked well.

“Offensively, we moved the ball well and provided lots of opportunities for players to score.

“They were in a 3-2 zone and our ball movement helped break them down.”

Jaz Apker-Montoya led Port Townsend with 21 points, 16 coming in the first half. Apker-Montoya’s shot was on target from outside as the junior hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Kaitlyn Meek added 13 points.

“Kaitlyn is in more of a point guard role than shooting guard and she is moving the ball really well,” Wilson said.

Port Townsend (2-1, 4-6) visits Chimacum in the rivals’ second matchup of the season. The Cowboys took the first game at Port Townsend in December.

“We controlled most of the first half but had some setbacks when it came to turnovers and bad shots that allowed Kingston to cut our lead from nine to three by halftime.

“Melissa Porter had a very strong game, she looked to score often and was vicious on defense.

QUILCENE — Rangers coach Briana Weller said foul trouble to starters Gina Brown and Brittney Beukes coupled with a stagnant offense took down Quilcene in a Sea-Tac League contest.

[We] continue to struggle to convert on offense and were outscored by the Kings in three out of four quarters,” Weller said. “We have to start working harder as a unit and have some confidence in our abilities (offensively and defensively). We have been playing very timid and conservatively since winter break. The girls have to get back to the fundamentals of the game and trusting in one another to do the same. We also have to outwork our opponent on both ends of the floor.

Sydney Brown led the Rangers with 11 points. Gina Brown fouled out early in the final quarter and scored five points. Marissa Kieffer added five for Quilcene (4-1, 5-3).

The Rangers visit Sea-Tac leading Mount Rainier Lutheran (5-1, 8-1) today.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks played “three pretty good quarters” in building up a 40-22 lead heading to the fourth against the Eagles.

“We had three pretty good quarters where we scored in double figures, and then one bad one,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.

“We didn’t play well in the fourth quarter. the ball quit going in for us a little bit. I don’t think we let up at all. We just didn’t shoot it that good in the fourth.”

Noa Montoya lead Port Townsend with 18 points.

The Redhawks leading scorer Kaiden Parcher had a tough night putting the ball in the hoop, scoring five points, but contributed in other ways with 10 points, six assists and five steals.

Guard Kyle Benedict also filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and five steals.

“Kyle did a number of good things for us,” Ulin said. “Our balance was really good. We played very well at times, we controlled the paint and outrebounded them I think it was 48-28.”

The victory sets up a contest for sole control of second place in the Olympic 2A tonight between Port Angeles (3-1, 7-5) and Olympic (3-1, 9-3).

“Olympic is athletic, physical and has two very good guards,” Ulin said. “It’s an important game. We want to win and stay one game behind North Kitsap.”
