PREP BASEBALL: Roughriders, Wolves well represented on All-Olympic League team

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles got four first-teamers on the Olympic League 2A all-league baseball team, while Sequim placed two on the first team.

The Roughriders and Wolves each added two more players on the second team.

Port Angeles (15-8), which finished second in the Olympic League 2A Division and fifth in the West Central District A Tournament to qualify for state, had second baseman Ben Basden, shortstop Luke Angevine, outfielder Ethan Flodstrom and pitcher Dane Bradow on the first team.

Flodstrom was the only freshman named to the first team.

Bradow had a 1.68 ERA in 25 innings pitched in league, while Basden hit .432. Angevine hit .500 with a .679 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.194. Flodstrom hit .400 with 5 doubles and 13 RBIs.

Sequim (14-7), which finished third in the Olympic League 2A Division, placed outfielder James Grubb and pitcher Ian Miller on the first team.

Grubb was the Wolves’ leading hitter at .432 with 19 stolen bases and 33 RBIs on the season. Miller was 5-2 with 32 strikeouts in 43 innings and a 2.61 ERA.

Making the second team for the Riders: junior Colton McGuffey, who made the team as a first baseman and a pitcher, and pitcher Brody Merritt, the only freshman to make the second team. McGuffey had an ERA of 2.53 and a batting average of .361. Merritt, used a lot as a reliever, had an ERA of 1.24 in 11 innings pitched.

Sequim second baseman Justin Porter made second team, as did shortstop Gavin Velarde.

Velarde hit .420 with 18 stolen bases and 33 runs scored on the season while Porter hit .417 with 23 runs scored.

The Port Angeles coaching staff also was named the top staff in the league along with league champion North Kitsap.

The MVP of the league was Ryan Hecker of North Kitsap.
