SEQUIM — The Port Angeles boys swim team continued its dominance in the pool with a decisive victory over rival Sequim on Thursday.

The Roughriders claimed victories in all 12 events, swept three of them and outscored the Wolves in 11 of 12 to earn a 128-41 win at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center.

With the win, the Riders are now 4-0 in Olympic League duals, with several swimmers and divers already qualified for districts.

Kris Wannquist and Tyler Burke each were double event winners for Port Angeles, with the former claiming the 200 yard individual medley and 100 freestyle and the latter the 50 and 500 free.

Avery Koehler also made a mark in the 100 backstroke, taking second to teammate Tarren Grimsley (1:07.56) with a district qualifying time of 1 minute, 8.62 seconds.

Koehler has now qualified for all eight individual events. That includes the 100 fly, which he won in 59.75 seconds at Thursday afternoon’s meet.

Also putting up district qualifying times for the Riders were John Macias with a first-place finish in the 200 free (2:04.40) and Jay Liang with a third-place mark in the 100 breast (1:13.76).

Port Angeles swept the 200 free, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.

Sequim’s best individual finishes at the meet were second-place marks from Noe Calderon in the 50 and 500 free, Doug Dunbar in the 100 free and Connor Christianson in the 1-meter dive.

Calderon’s times in the 50 and 500 free qualified him for districts in both events. He had a slight improvement on his best time in the 50 free while also bettering his 500 free mark by five seconds.

The Wolves also had a second-place finish in the 200 free relay. The group of Eric Prosser, Steve Dewey, Dunbar and Calderon put up a district qualifying time of 1:47.82.

Port Angeles’ relay of Macias, Liang, Conner Reid and Joe Elder won the event in 1:46.21.

The Riders will host their final home meet of the regular season at William Shore Pool next Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The meet will include a senior farewell for the team’s 16 seniors.

Sequim next travels to Olympic in Silverdale on Tuesday.

CHIMACUM — The Wolves defense kept the Cowboys scoreless for a 12-minute stretch between the second and fourth quarters to earn a nonleague victory Thursday.

Taylor Balkan scored 13 points and Alexis Besand added 10 to help Sequim improve to 3-8 on the season.

“We missed at least five breakaways, and that would have blown the game open, but it didn’t,” Chimacum coach Brad Burlingame said. “It kind of went the other way on us.”

Mallori Cossell was the lone Cowboy in double figures with 10 points.

Chimacum (2-2 in league, 3-8 overall) has the rest of the weekend off and heads to Life Christian on Tuesday to resume Class 1A Nisqually League play.
