BREMERTON — Port Angeles High School golfer Cale Wentz finished fourth at the Olympic League championships held Monday at the Kitsap Golf Club and qualified to go directly to the state 2A boys golf championship.
Meanwhile, four of Wentz’s teammates — Kolby Charles, Sky Gelder, Noah Myers and Austin Worthington — qualified to go on to the District 3 tournament, though Worthington had to go to a tiebreaker to make it, as he had to last year.
Sequim’s Adrian Aragorn also qualified for the district meet with a ninth-place score of 88, while teammate Levi Breithaupt will be an alternate to district.
The top seven golfers at league qualify for the state tournament, while the next 11 qualify for district, which will be played at Allenmore Golf Club in Tacoma on May 13.
Wentz shot an 18-hole score of 82, just four shots off the league championship score of 78 by Bainbridge freshman Tom McFadden.
Five Port Angeles golfers finished in the top 18. Gelder and Charles finished tied for 12th, with each shooting 90.
Freshman Myers was 17th with a 92 and Worthington 18th with a 94. The Riders also had seven golfers in the top 24 as Max Gagnon was 23rd with a 96 and Tate Alton 24th with a 97, missing out on district, but solid scores nonetheless.
Breithaupt was 21st with a 95 and Joey Kang was 32nd with a 106.
Eight girls move on
Both the Sequim and Port Angeles girls had strong performances at the league tournament.
Sequim’s Raimey Brewer finished sixth with a 98 and is going directly to state. Three teammates finished bunched up together and will go on to district, also at Allenmore. Sara German finished 12th and Chloe Tweter 13th, each with 107s, while Kendra Dodson was 14th with a 109.
Meanwhile, Port Angeles’ Autumn Wilson-Rowland shot a 98, tied with Brewer, and will be headed to state. Going to district will be Mia Neff, who shot a 103 to finish ninth and Claire Osterberg and Malena Marquez, who each shot 111 and finished 16th and 17th, respectively.
Port Angeles Freshman Layla Parker, who shot a 116 and finished 20th, will be an alternate.
“Which was amazing considering that in her practice round, she had a 157,” said coach Michael DuPuis.
