OAT RUN: Port Townsend, women runners shine in adventure run

JOYCE — Port Townsend and women runners all shined at the fifth annual Olympic Adventure Trail Run held Saturday in and around the woods and hills southwest of Port Angeles.

More than 240 men and women from all around the Olympic Peninsula and the Puget Sound area participated in a 12-kilometer race and a half marathon.

Port Townsend runners dominated the 12K event, winning the top three overall times and the top men’s and women’s times.

Robert Bondurant of Port Townsend had the best overall time at 49 minutes, 36.75 seconds. Fuxia Stankus, also of Port Townsend, had the best women’s time at 51:49.49, which was also the second-best overall time. In fact, women had three of the top five 12K times, five out of the top 10 and 12 out of the top 25. Don Young of Port Townsend came in third with a time of 51:50.67.

Keith Laverty of Bainbridge Island won the half-marathon in 1:22:05.14. Laverty also won the men’s 30-39 category. Tyson Rickman of Everett came in second at 1:27:54.04, the best time in the men’s 18-29 category. Meanwhile, Craig Isenberg, another Port Townsend runner, came in third at 1:29:37.61 and won the 40-49 category.

Sarah Oase of Sequim, with a time of 1:42:10.27 had the best women’s time in the half-marathon. Her time was good for 13th overall. Gael Gebow of Everett had the second-best women’s time at 1:43:26.48 and Meghan Ahearn of Vashon had the third-best women’s time at 1:50:38.42.

Oase and Gebow came in first and second place in the women’s 40-49 category while Ahearn won the women’s 30-39 category.

A total of 121 runners competed in the half-marathon and 120 competed in the 12K. Runners came from as far away as Duncan, British Columbia and Juneau, Alaska.

The OAT Run donates funds to Backcountry Horsemen of Washington, Peninsula Chapter and to the Peninsula Trails Coalition for the construction and maintenance of the Olympic Discovery Trail and the Olympic Adventure Trail.
