NORTH OLYMPIC DISCOVERY MARATHON: Numbers way up for 17th annual race

PORT ANGELES — More than 2,000 people came out to run distances long and short, and “discovered” near-perfect racing conditions and weather this weekend that helped lead to record-breaking times and a big increase in marathon runners.

“It was a perfect day for a marathon,” said race director Victoria Jones. “We got very lucky.”

The headwinds remained relatively calm and a thick layer of fog over the Strait of Juan de Fuca remained over the water for most of the race as runners competed in sunshine and cool temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

The number of marathon runners in this year’s race was way up. A total of 364 runners finished the marathon, up from 262 last year — a jump of 39 percent. A total of 818 runners finished the half-marathon, down a bit from 2018’s 919, but 385 10K runners finished this year compared to last year’s 345 and 331 5K runners came across the finish line, compared to last year’s 218.

In all, 1,898 individuals and 28 relay teams finished the race. Another 400 kids ran in the kid’s marathon Saturday.

In 2018, 1,744 individuals and 25 relay teams finished, with roughly another 400 children in the kid’s marathon.

Jones also said that a total of 620 volunteers aided in this year’s race. Jones called them a “rock star group of volunteers.”

“Port Angeles and Sequim are really showing up to support this event,” she said.

She said the local support for the race, in its 17th year, keeps growing each year. What is also growing is the race’s renown not just around Washington, but around the country, both for its beauty and the perfect running conditions.

Jones said runners from 36 states and four countries (the U.S., Canada, Germany and Singapore) competed. A total of 56 British Columbia residents signed up for the various races.

Jones credits the word-of-mouth attention the NODM is receiving for much of its growth.

“People tell their friends, ‘you’ve got to do this’,” she said. “Our reputation nationwide has really grown.”

Despite so many out-of-state runners competing, local competitors really showed their chops in this race.

Mikey Cobb of Sequim won the men’s marathon in a record time of 2 hours, 33 minutes, 36 seconds. Another Sequim runner, Heidi Hietpas, won the women’s marathon in 3:36.16. A Port Angeles High School student, Lauren Larson, won the women’s 10K with a time of 37:33, beating second place by more than five minutes.

The men’s half-marathon was won by a visitor, Brody Ruffner, of Newton, N.C., while the women’s half-marathon was won by Nicole Lerner from nearby Keyport.

The men’s 10K was won by Keith Laverty of Bainbridge. Laverty ran the marathon and won and in fact, it was his record-setting time that Cobb beat by more than a minute.

A Canadian won the men’s 5K, Chris Callendar of Victoria, B.C., while the women’s 5K was won by Robin Jones of Bremerton.

The winning relay team was “Mrs. Brown & Her Lovely Daughters” of Kent.
