MICHAEL CARMAN’S GOLF COLUMN: Sixkiller hosts luncheon for Husky golf tournament in Port Angeles

THOSE STEEPED IN Husky football history have long cheered the name of former quarterback Sonny Sixkiller, who is in town today to announce his first Husky Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim on Friday, July 29.

Sixkiller has lined up a who’s who list of Husky greats for the tournament, which will benefit the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.

Husky legends set to appear are former head coach Don James, James’ longtime defensive coordinator and eventual successor Jim Lambright, and former standouts like Outland Trophy winner Steve Emtman, Jason Chorak, Bob Schloredt, Jim Mora, Chuck Nelson and others.

“I have always wanted to set up a tournament to showcase the legacy of University of Washington sports, especially football,” said Sixkiller.

The public is invited to meet Sixkiller at a reception at 7 Cedars Casino, one of the major sponsors of the event at 5 p.m. today.

Former Husky football players like Port Angeles High School alumni Scott Jones and Sam Hurworth plus Sequim resident Don McKeta and Port Townsend’s Chuck Allen will also attend the reception.

McKeta and Allen played on the UW’s 1960 and 1961 Rose Bowl champion teams.

“We are delighted to be a part of this tournament – we think it will be the premier sporting event on the Peninsula,” said Jerry Allen, Jamestown S’Klallam tribe CEO.

“We have been very fortunate to partner with Sonny for the past 10 years.”

Sixkiller stepped in as starting quarterback as a sophomore in 1970, leading the nation in yards passing per game with 230.

He helped a program that had finished 1-9 in 1969 to a 22-10 record over the next three seasons.

Sixkiller was widely known during his playing days for the unique qualities of his name, his game, his number (6) and his Native American ancestry.

He played in the World Football League in 1974 and 1975, did some film and television work and was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 1985.

You can see him today in ads for 7 Cedars Casino and Cedars at Dungeness, and he is currently the associate general manager for the Washington-IMG College Sports Network, providers of radio, print and sports marketing services for UW athletics.

Tournament organizers are seeking sponsors and players for the event.

For more information, phone the foundation office at 360-417-7144.

Boys and girls tourney

The 20th annual Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula Charity Golf Classic will be held at Dungeness on Friday.

The two-player team best ball event will include three divisions based on combined handicaps, plus a Calloway division with gross and net prizes for each division.

Players can compete in a KP contest for a new (to you) car from Price Ford; a $5,000 putt from Jose’s Famous Salsa and a $10,000 hole-in-one from Northwest Eye Surgeons and Paragon Dermatology.

Cost is $100 per player, which includes a cart, tee prize, lunch and awards after play.

For more information, phone 360-683-8095.

Pirates golf tourney

Another inaugural golf event is coming up at Cedars at Dungeness.

The Peninsula College Pirates Athletic Association Spring Golf Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 21.

The two-player tourney will open with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

Teams will play six holes of reverse scramble, six holes of best ball and six holes of alternate shot.

Cost is $100 per player or $200 per team of two.

Single players are welcomed and will be placed on teams by the tournament director.

The event will serve as the signature fundraising event for the Pirates Athletic Association.

Funds generated from this tournament provide scholarship opportunities to worthy student-athletes who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend Peninsula College and represent the community in a positive way.

The day will include prizes, gift bags, interaction with Peninsula student-athletes, food and more.

Playing in the tournament will be a good way of supporting the NWAACC Champion men’s soccer and men’s basketball champions.

It’s been quite the year for Pirates athletics, so I urge you to go out and support the area school.

Sponsorship opportunities are available.

To play in or sponsor the event, contact head basketball coach and athletic development coordinator Lance Von Vogt at 360-417-6467 or email lvonvogt@ypencol.edu.

Peninsula ladies

The Peninsula Golf Club Lady Golfers of Port Angeles held their season kick-off breakfast at the Peninsula Golf clubhouse last Wednesday.

Following the breakfast, a nine-hole scramble was played with six teams representing both the 18-hole group and the nine-hole group.

The winning team was Dolly Burnett, Linda Bruch and Ruth Thomson.

Following golf, the first club business meeting was held.

The competition for the Ladies Club members for May is the Grey Cup, a 54-hole competition.

Peninsula Lady Golfers golf on Wednesday mornings beginning at 9 a.m.

For details, phone Cindy Schlaffman at 360-452-7955.

Cedars ladies

Dungeness Lady Niner’s and the 18-hole group played a challenging game of scramble during a thunderstorm last Thursday.

The ladies were playing in the first June Hall Memorial Tournament.

The day marked a celebration of life in memory of June, who had been active in the Dungeness group of golfers for the past 15 years, and who succumbed to cancer earlier this year.

Play was followed by a light lunch arranged by Bonney Benson during which many shared stories of June and her love of golf, which kept everyone laughing and nodding in recollection.

June’s husband, Don Hall, attended and awarded prizes to the winning teams; he also shared some special memories of June and her competitive golfing spirit and expressed his appreciation for this gathering of her golfing friends.

Cedars assistant pro Garrett Smithson created the teams for the tournament and was present to thank Jan Boyungs for organizing this special event.

The following teams walked away with the prizes:

First place went to Lyn Gilbert, Vernice Quigley, Donna Teel and Debbie Kahle.

A close second was Barbara Burrows, Jo Hendrickson, Lindsay Busch and Lee Stanley

Third place went to the team of Lori Purser, Dian Woodle, Marlene Erickson and Kathy Benedict.

All proceeds from the tournament were presented to the Clallam Country Volunteer Hospice as a donation in June Hall’s name and in a gesture of appreciation for what that organization had done for June.

The winning teams added their prizes to the pot, swelling the final donation to $200.

Poster wins award

The Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Olympic Medical Center Foundation can take a bow.

The poster from the $500,000 Hole In One Challenge won a gold award from the Washington Festival and Events Association for poster design.

InsideOut Solutions of Sequim designed the poster and the graphics are used for all marketing materials to promote this fun summer golf challenge.

The $500,000 Hole In One Challenge is a joint fundraiser for the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce and also the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.

It will return this year with qualifying taking place Aug. 19-21 and Aug. 26-28 at Cedars at Dungeness, Peninsula Golf Club and SkyRidge Golf Course of Sequim.

The finals will take place Sept. 10 at Dungeness.
